CJ5 tranny and xfer?

I have a 78 CJ5 and I want to swap the 3spd manual for an automatic, any suggestions?

Don't do it? The challenge with putting an automatic in a CJ5 is that the wheelbase is so short and automatics tend to be so long. You end up with a short rear driveshaft and crazy angles. If you have to do it, I would look at the GM TH350 and Jeep TF999 automatic transmissions. With the TH350, you will have to adapt it both your Jeep engine and Dana 20 transfer case. The TF999 came stock in 1980s CJ7s and CJ8s, so it can bolt right to your Jeep engine and you can use a Dana 300 transfer case from an 80s CJ as well.

I would go look for more info in the CJ forums at Jeep Forum, they have a bigger group of CJ owners and a lot of history to cull info from.
