Ignition Control Module

Has anyone had issues with the ICM ? I noticed when I first bought the 5, some black goo, with a hard texture that seemed to be leaking from a little silver box. Never gave either much thought. Thought the black stuff was some old "oops" frpm the previous owner.

Well the CJ died on me during a 4th of July parade (hot and slow moving), so I though maybe I needed a pusher fan to blow more air through the radiator, also installed a fan shroud. Well last week during a local festival deal, small parade (moderate temp, but slow) she died again. Both times it was at the end, and after sitting for approx 10 min she fired right up.

Talking with my regluar mechanic, he mentioned the ICM, overheating issues with it. I did some on line research and think that may be my problem.

Now to the one in the jeep, there is no markings or mfg type stickers. Judging by the old shellac type goo, the "newer" condition of the one in there now, I will say this is a replacment ICM.

I pulled the module, the back is all together looking. Covered with a black rubbery substance with no signs of leaking. But the black stuff on the fenderwell, is tacky now. before it was hard as a rock. I have no idea how old the ICM is, or anything else. This is a learning process for me.

Have one ordered (Motorcraft brand) and picking up in a couple hours.

Has anyone had the same issue ???

Also I am thinking about the DUI distributor/all in one set up. Just trying some simple solutions first if that make sense. Would like to keep her as original as possible but I may need to go with the all in one.

Steve

Ok, here is a thought. And ANY and ALL suggestions or advice will be taken.

While waiting for my new ICM, I pullled the old one. Cleaned the two plugs and remounted.

I used some large nuts as spacers, and lifted or raised the ICM off the inner fender well by 1/2". My thinking was to create more air circulation around it.

I realize the area it is mounted gets quite warm, but where else can it be moved. The little plugs do not give a lot of options.

Thanks again.

Steve

Spitballing on this.

Get a PC fan and mount it to blow across the ICM. They are 12V and cheap (Radio Shack should have) You can have run with ignition on or switch it.

I had the same issue on my '82 CJ-7. It would run great for who knows how long and then would fall flat on it's face like the carb just gave up the ghost. I replaced the icm and never had problems after that. When I installed mine, I noticed a bit of oxidation/corrosion where the mounting bolts go through the fender. I cleaned that area up with a wire brush and put a light coat of dielectric grease on it before installation. I wheeled that Jeep hard for many years and always kept a spare icm in the toolbox just in case.

I just put in the new ICM, and its running like it should. And like gcaughron said, the old one will be tucked away.

What I did was use some nuts as spacers to keep the ICM off the fender well. Also to go along with sparky, a small fan is the next upgrade.

Thanks guys
