Potentially Buying a CJ

Hi guys,

I am looking at a CJ7 renegade that is for sale and has some mechanical issues. I am not much of a mechanic at all so I was wondering if you would pay for it. The jeep is all original straight six with a three speed manual trans. Body is in decent shape no rust.

The bad parts though are that there is a small oil leak, the steering box is missing the bolt, needs new tires, and needs a new speedometer. Would 3000 be a safe investment?

Thanks

I don't know where you are but we paid 2k for a 74 that had no floors. Mechanically everything was good but alot of rust repair to do. I would say 3k isn't bad.

What year is it? How many miles on it? As far as the bad, remember old CJ's don't leak, they mark their territory :) Which bolt is missing on the steering box? Bolt holding it to the frame? Tires can be picked up fairly cheap on craigslist if you don't want to buy new. Speedo could be just a new cable which is an easy fix, or a new gear also easy to fix, if that is what is wrong.

I guess all in all, without seeing it or a pic, is doesn't sound out of line to me.
Just my $0.02

Nice, might start up a build thread so we can watch the progression. Afraid I don't know much about transmissions. Guessing it could be a syncro. A lot of write ups in the web about rebuilding them. Not a lot of parts in them but I've never dove into one to know that much about them. Good luck with your new project!
