16 or 17 wheel to replace stock? looking for opinions

Hello all, I have a 2010 Wrangler Sport 2 door with stock 17 wheels and tires 255/75-17. I am looking to replace the wheels and tires and (based on my limited knowledge) am thinking to install the following;

Mickey Thompson Classics II
17x9 wheel size
5x5 bolt pattern
4-1/2 backspacing
-12mm offset

Nitto Trail Grapplers - 285/70-17

I checked using an online wheel/tire calculator and it seems these tires would be a tad bit shorter (not as tall) and an inch or so wider than stock.

Is my calculation correct? I want to make sure I have plenty of clearance and it to handle good, and curious if I am heading in the right direction or should I be looking to replace the 17's with 16's?

Those tires are going to be taller and wider than your stock SR-As. Also, the trail grappler is a ridiculously heavy tire = good bye MPG.

I might have just answered my own question .. looks like the 17 wheel is the only one with the correct bolt pattern. In any case, would be interesting to see what you all have to say. Thanks.

Thanks ESP. What would you recommend for a good capable tire for the MT wheels? something good on and offroad?

No. You can get 15, 16, 17, and 18 wheels with correct bolt patterns for a JK. You have many options and better choices regarding tires too.

MT and being good on road don't really go together but if I were to recommend one, I would go with the BFG KM2. There are many other choices for MTs but if your looking for a tire that is good both on/off road then you should consider an AT instead. Goodyear Duratracs are very popular.

you can get 17x9 and 16x8's for your 5x5 bolt pattern. Either size rim is good for the JK

Im just wondering if the 17x9 wheel and tire combo I am looking at is going to be close for comfort as far as clearance goes on my stock Jeep .. the wheel is about 1 inch wider than stock and the 285/70-17 tire seems to be the best fit .. maybe not (I think thats a 33 or close to it). Thats why I started to think maybe to look at 16 vs 17. Im going to look around, maybe there is a 32 inch tire that would be a good fit on those wheels.

This is a science figuring out a new wheel and tire combo .. I definitely know more than I did a few days ago but not having any prior experience in this area makes it all the more difficult. If I went with a 17" rim I would have more rim choices but Im thinking the 16" might be the way to go. Anyway, I think I have narrowed down my choices. Now I just need to make the big decision;

Wheel
----------
Level 8 Tracker Size 16X8.5 5-127 -6MTB

Tire
----------
Nitto Terra Grappler AT LT285/75R16D1 122Q B
or
General Grabber AT2 LT285/75R16D1 122Q W

If I completey lose my mind and decide to go back to 17" then I will have to decide between the following rims;

Black Rock D-Window Alloy 17X8, Level 8 Tracker 17X8.5, or Mickey Thompson Classic II 17x9

Any thoughts would be welcome! Happy Holiday

Sounds like you have been on Tirerack.com....

If you are going to buy new rims, why buy 17's? The tires will continue to cost you more. Also why 285/75's?
Have you considered either of these since you haven't mentioned a lift kit?
295/75R16 - They are 33.42 x 11.6
295/70R16 - They are 33.26 x 11.6

I don't think either of these will rub without a lift kit, does anyone know for sure?
Don't want to steer anyone wrong, so correct me if I'm off here.....

hey sorry for responding late .. I ended up keeping my stock rims (saving some money) and going with General Grabber AT 265/70-17. Bought from Sullivan Tire (great service), tires are working great! Low noise, good traction, a little worse gas mileage but not too bad. The only thing I noticed is the Jeep does not turn as sharp when pulling in to a parking spot or something like that. I think if I replaced my rims I would probably go with the 16.

16's are the best I think, Have quite a few options on tires and they make the tires look beefier
