4 tires or 5?

I've got a set of fairly new Dueler AT tires (255/70 R18) on my Jeep but will be switching to Duratracs in the same size 255/70 R18 and will probably never go back.

I've got two options:
1) Keep a Dueler AT on the spare and never rotate it through.
2) Put a Duratrac on the spare wheel and do the five-wheel rotation pattern.

Obvious pros and cons:
Pro of getting the 5th Duratrac - If my tire ever fails (sidewall,) then I can just drop in the spare without needing to worry about shaving a tire.

Con of getting the 5th Duratract - Cost.

My main question: Is there any downside to doing the 5 wheel rotation pattern? Does it put more wear on the drive train since one tire will always be a little "off"?

Not to sound rude, I see the options as:
  1. Do it right (5 matching tires)
  2. Do it wrong (1 mismatched tire)

It cost no more IN THE LONG RUN to rotate 5 tires as opposed to 4. Just the upfront costs.

Good luck

I bought 5 matched tires, but only do a 4 tire rotation because I'm anal about my spare looking good on the back of my rig and I don't really like tire covers. Next time around I will only have to buy 4 tires as long as I don't change brand or size. Am I the only one who does this?

Took my Jeep religiously to the dealer for oil changes and tire rotation....Never once did they include the spare. By the time I found a screw in sidewall of my tire, the spare had way too much tread vs the other four.

Oh, the screw is still there btw...clipped it off a bit with a Dremel. Some fix-a-flat sealed it up. It's been over a year and the TPS is warning me again. Next round I will make sure they include the spare.

I can't say whether I will stay with the same tires when these wear out, I might as well use them all and replace them all. More likely than not I'll at least go with 33" tires. Why go through the hassle of trying to sell one tire.

If it was me and you plan to go all Duratrac and "never go back", I would go ahead with all 5. A lot of times places will offer you a discount on the 5th tire. I know Discount Tire I believe has offered $50 off a fifth tire to forum members, may wanna double check though as Im not their sales person lol.

I have never had to use my spare in the past 9 years until recently this past winter when a rim took a bang. Normally I try and keep the best tire from the previous set, even when I went from the stock Goodyear tires to BFG ATs, I hated that stock tire but I couldnt afford a 5th tire at the time. Would still serve the purpose of a spare though if needed.

My current set of BFG ATs 31x10.5x15 have 84,000 miles on them and some tread believe it or not lol. Still leaning towards the KO2s when I get a set next month and may go up in size. If I can afford a 5th I will get one if I go up in size, if I stay same size I will skip a 5th purchase more than likely.

As far as rotation, I dont rotate the spare as its from a previous set. Honestly I have only rotated this last set 2 or 3 times. I havent seen a need to do them every 5000 miles as they recommend, just when I feel they need to be. Im sure there are benefits to rotating them more often though depending on the tire and all, this is just my personal habits lol.

Couldn't have said it better myself? ...................Agree 100%

The spare you don't rotate in will hit its shelf life at some point...when exactly I dunno???

Exactly, age and sunlight have an effect on tires. It can't just sit there unused forever. It cost no more (in the long run) to rotate in the 5th tire.

It looks just as good on the back as a new one.

To prevent it hitting the shelf life, I will rotate it in when I get new tires, putting one of the new ones in the spare slot.

5. I made the mistake of buying 4 Sport S wheels for a very good price with the intent to buy 1 for the spare. Almost a year later and I still haven't been able to get my hands on a single; they're all sold as either 4 or 5.

Lesson learned.

This is the way to go. I do this with my Duratrac's. Nice to always have the shiny new one on the back, and you only have to buy 4 each time you replace them all.
