Backspacing question!

Most lifts recommend using a rim with a BS of 4.5" the new rims I'm looking at purchasing have a BS of 4.75". I have a 4" Teraflex lift with 37x13.5 Nitto mud grappler tires. Will the extra .25" make a difference? Will it create any problems for my jeep? Please help!

It'll make your wheels tighter on your Jeep, which may cause you problems with the tires rubbing your swaybar or links, especially with those beastly Nittos. For backspacing, the smaller # pushes your wheels farther out, the bigger ones pull your wheels in.

I appreciate it! So your saying I probably shouldn't go with the 4.75" bs rims just to stay away from any problems and try an find some that are 4.5" bs? I'm looking for a 18-20" rim. Any suggestions that'll fit the Nitto's and are 4.5bs

Spacers would help solve the issue, but they are really just band-aids. Best bet is to get wheels with the proper amount of backspacing.

Don't have a lot of experience with rims that big, myself. You lookin at the XD's, or something?

Since you've got a 4" lift, you should be fine, fender-wise. And if you get 4.5" backspacing, you should be okay width-wise. As AzTJ said, I'd steer clear of wheel spacers. That's just my personal preference...it puts unnecessary stress on your bearings and joints. Also, your Jeep won't pass inspection in some states with spacers, not to mention that quite a few tire shops won't install them.

If you want a wider stance, just go with smaller backspacing. 4" bs will make your tires stick out farther from the body of the Jeep. The problem you may run into there is that many states require your fender flares to cover your tires. You'll be able to slide it by most city cops, but sheriff's deputies and troopers, especially, will break out the tape measure on you.

Then again, there are folks on the forum running skinny little no-coverage flares that say they've never had a problem.

Up to you.

There's probably a greater selection of rims at 4.5, though.

And just so you're aware, the cost of your tires is gonna skyrocket for rims that big. That's why most JK peeps go with 15 or 16" rims...the wheels will be lighter, give you a bigger contact patch on the ground, and cost FAR less than if you go with 17's and above.

Nope - but give Discount Tire a call, they might have a few good suggestions.

Final decision- ATX slab beadlocks (17x9) , and the nitto mud grapplers 37x13.5r17. The beadlocks have an offset of 38. I don't quite understand offset but I hear it's like the backspacing. If its an offset of 38 will that be 4.5" or less backspacing? Will it fit? Please help

Offset and backspacing are not the same. A wheel's offset is the distance in mm between the center of the wheel and its mounting pads.

Backspace measures the distance btw the mounting surface of the wheel and its back edge.

Lemme see if I can look up your wheel...If you can, post a link to the wheels...

Okay...are these the ones you're looking at?

http://www.atozfabrication.com/store...ock-wheel.html

If so, you need the 5x5 (also called 5x127) bolt pattern. The ones in the link have a 3.5" backspace, which means they're gonna stick out pretty far...in fact, well over an inch with those 13.5" wide boulders you wanna run. With that kind of weight and that tire size, you're gonna wear out your bearings in the not too distant future.

They SHOULD work, but I gotta ask...is your front axle sleeved and gusseted? Better yet, are you running an aftermarket axle? Because with all that weight and rolling resistance and distance from your Jeep's wheel hubs, anything but Driving Miss Daisy wheeling is gonna bend or break your axle, sooner or later.

Just a thought.

Those are the rims. I want the rims but do you know a 37" tire that's fit those rims perfectly? 4.5bs. I realized with those massive nittos I'm going to need new axles but I didn't want to spend the extra money so that's why I'm looking for new rims and tires. I want those ATX beadlocks but I want some different tires that are good in the snow also.

I want those rims. With different tires. Will the backspacing still be 3.5" and stick out about an inch? What if I got wider bushwhacked fenders. That covered the tires? Woul that be okay?
