"Chalk test" Q:

I just got a new set of GY DTs and Im trying to dial in the correct psi. Right now I have them set at about 30. They dont wander or feel too rough, but I want to get an optimal lifespan out of them. I havent done an actual chalk test with chalk, but I can see where the tires are dirty, so I have a general idea how the chalk test would pan out.
My question is:
On these tires, how far to the edge should the chalk line go? On my tires, I see the dirt line a little more than half way past the middle of that outside tread (maybe a little more outboard than the red line). Should I see no chalk all the way to the shoulder of the tread (yellow line)? The DuraTracs look to be a little more of a rounded profile than a more square passenger type highway/all season tire profile, so Im not sure how much to air them down

There are two kinds of chalk tests. The one you're talking about, you wanna make a line HORIZONTALLY across the tire, not just along the outer edge. You're pretty close at 30 PSI.

A couple of links, one for each kind:

I know mine like to ride on the red line of yours on my 15x8 wheels. I think you would have to drop it way down to get it out to the yellow. I run ~29psi in my 33x12.50x15 duratracs

Oops. I misunderstood the question. Thought those lines were showing how you chalked the tire.

I agree with InvertChaos...if you're close to the red, you're in good shape, especially if you're getting there with around 30psi, give or take. If you're getting to the yellow you'll be underinflated, and it'll show by still having chalk (or grease pencil, which I prefer cuz it doesn't come off as easily) in the middle of your tread.

Thanks, guys. Thats pretty much what I thought. Im right around 29-30ish and its just around that red line if measured horizontally. I figure if I air down much more it will be too under inflated anyway. The ride is nice and my MPGs since switching over havent been effected too much by the more aggressive tread. Im about 17ish MPGees in stop and go back roads. I havent had a chance to take any longer highway rides, but I figure it should be around 20 which it was it was at before. Fine by me
