Tread pattern is not going to hurt a thing. you could have 4 different patterns and if they are all about the size you wil be just fine.

Okay good.. My friends dad that's a mechanic seems to think that it'll eat my diffs... He also said that mud tires are hard on your front end?

If you have 37 inch mud tires it would be hard on your front end. and say you had a full tread duratrac and a bald snow tire, then maybe you might get annoyed. but no you wont die or break the jeep. youll be fine.

As long as the tires are the same on each side of the axle and the same size on all four corners, you'll be fine.

The only way it would do anything to either diff is if you run a different diameter tire on the same axle. You can run a different width tire or different tread and it won't matter at all. In fact, I run 33" 12.5 BFG ATs on my CJ, but use a 33" 10.5 BFG AT as a spare. This reduces the size and weight of my spare, so I have less stress on my spare tire carrier, a sleeker profile, and a fully functional spare!
