Increase wheel width and keep same offset?

I have a 2001 TJ. I want to go 35x12.50R17 on 17x9" wheels. I figure the backspacing should be 4.25". Here's why, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm running 33x12.50R15 on 15x8" with backspacing of 3.75". They fit fine. If I increase the wheel width 1" then the backspacing would increase .5" to keep the same offset, right?

Thanks!

4.25 will move them in closer to the jeep not away. the tread itself might not be a full inch wider. Or you could just keep your same rims with 15 tires and not have to worry about it.
