New Wheels / Tires - cupping question

Hi all, I just upgraded my 2012 from the stock 16 steel wheels and original 29 inch tires to some AEV Savegre wheels thanks to a great deal I found on craigslist. The improvement in the look of the jeep is phenomenal.

However, the road noise is a LOT more, and it doesn't handle quite as good. The tires are Wrangler AT/S in size 265/70/17, which were what was mounted on the wheels and have about half tread left. This is a much bigger, more aggressive tire, so I would expect more noise, but I'm also getting a "whirring" noise, particularly in that 15 to 35 mph range. When the tire shop mounted them, they said that two of the tires had some minor cupping, so they put them on the back. They said it wasn't a safety issue, but I might experience some vibration (i really haven't - just noise), and that they would leave them on the back for about 6,000 miles before rotating and that they would likely wear through the cupping issue.

My question is - is that correct? And what would be a quieter, better tire that still looks aggressive but might ride a little better. Really the only time the Jeep is offroad is during hunting season, so I don't need a really aggressive tire. It's more cosmetic than functional.
