newbie asks 18 inch vs 17 inch

I am in the process of specing my new Tj and i am leaning sahara. but i wanted to down grade the 18 inch wheels to the simple black steel mopar
winter wheels that are 17 inches.

it looks like i could sell the stock alu wheels and the dealer would have to reset some computer stuff. is this insane? what are the trade offs

No trade offs other than more sidewall, and less expensive tires for the 17's. But if your Jeep is coming with 18's it's probably not a TJ.... It would be a JK. A word of advice tho', if you're going to "upgrade" the wheels, upgrade to something that has less backspace than a factory wheel, so you can upgrade tires when you're ready without buying another set of wheels.....

I think you will do better $$ wise if you sell the stock one vs getting them from a dealer. Also the backspacing(how close the wheel is to in relationship to the mounting surface) on most dealer/stock wheels is too close when larger wider aftermarket tires are add. Hence the downgraded rims might not work if you later want different larger tires later on.
