Spare tire mount?

I looked and couldn't find it. Is there a recommended weight or spec in which you should consider moving the spare tire from the tail gate to its own mount? I'm running a 2005 Rubicon unlimited.

Thanks

I dont know about weight, but size is usually why you would move it..larger tires hit 3rd breaklight and start to block your view..

Ahh....I thought it was due to stress weight on the gate.

That too. Don't know about the '05's, but on JK's '07 to current, if you go over a 33" tire you need to get a new tire carrier, or the extra weight could bust up your welds, especially if you wheel with the spare on the carrier.

For 33" tires and aftermarket rims, you usually need only to buy new bumpstops, since the backspacing on your rims will be different than the stockers.

Again, not sure how much of this applies to an '05.

33" and larger will stress the gate over time. After awhile you will need to start lifting the gate to close it. I have heard of people using the stock mount on 33" in tires for 6 months or more without a problem. The key to making it work is to ensure the tire makes a proper connection with the rubber bump stops on the tailgate and the area under the tailgate. These rubber bump stops will keep the tire from moving around causing more stress on the gate. I currently run a 33" with a steel wheel on the stock mount but I only have it mounted when I have to. I have ordered a new LOD bomber with tire swing but I am still waiting for it to come in, once I have it I wonít have to work about screwing up my gate,

I currently have a 33" with an aluminum wheel so the weight is less than a steel Wheel. Was just wondering if there was a standard weight so I could know for sure.

So ive been looking at getting new tires myself.. 33"s. From what ive read on the forums so far, sooner or later I'll need a lift or spacers, and sooner or later i'll need to get a new spare tire carrier. Wondering if I should even get these wheels/tires now :-/ Or go with 32"s, though im not sure I would like the look..
