tire salesman says I can't upgrade tires!!!

I went to get 31's for my "07 wrangler x. It's now riding the stock tires with no lift kit. The guy says I can't because I have antilock brakes!!! He says I'm stuck with stock tires forever because I have an antilock brake system.
He says if I upgrade to larger tires, it will fry the computer of the antilock brake system and I'll have brake failure (meaning I'll drive into a school bus full of children)
Is this true???? Can you turn it off and put big tires on???? any help much appreciated.

Car salesmen are notorious for knowing absolutely nothing about the actual cars they sell... They are a great source of entertainment on a boring Saturday. We call it "F'n with the salesmen"

He's wrong.

Does your BIL know that some jeeps come with 32's from the factory? I'm pretty confident that they don't make alterations to the ABS for each Jeep they pump outta the factory. I'm also certain that I have upgraded tire sizes in plenty of vehicles with ABS prior to my Jeeps without taking out school buses full of children, but you do what you need to do to be comfortable...

Sorry, I'm cranky tonite..... :-/

Your abs doesnt even come on until you slam on your brakes hard enough to where the tired would lock up. If you have ever done this on a non-abs vehicle the tires will lock and keep going whichever direction.

ABS (anti-lock braking system) stops that and allows the tires to still rotate so you can manage control even under high stress braking.

So, I think you will be okay!

I have worked with 100s of engineers and as long as they stay IN their field of expertise, they are right about 1/2 the frigging time.....get them off on a tangent and that number drops to virtually 0% of the time..... your BIL is WAY wrong.

ABS works by sensing rotary motion of wheel....if that rotary motion CEASES.... it releases the brake pressure MOMENTARILY until rotary motion is sensed again......it can literally do this 100s of times a minute.....hence that GROWLING you feel/hear when you it the ABS brakes too hard.

If anything, you risk overloading the solenoids that control the braking release because of larger inertial loading AT the wheels. This SAME effect would happen if you had a tribe of FAT people in your Jeep........So... if you fear larger tires....fear larger passengers too......

As an engineer, I can tell you this is absolutely correct. Every last bit of it.

How do you think all those big new pickups drive around on 38's? Your BIL should stop feeding you a line of crap and stick to his field.

Good fun, but seeing as the thread was about a tire salesman was just a convenient slam. But I must say most auto or auto type salesman of anytype are there own worst enemies, just be cool, knowlegable of your product and all its components is not a hard thing to do, so this tire guy was an idiot and you should find somebody who you feel is shootin you straight.

going bigger wont effect your ABS. If you have a automatic you will want to have your speedo corrected weather it be via gear or computer flash(don't know wich system the jk uses I beleive I read it uses a magnetic switch i could be wrong).

You guys are the best. I figured lots of people raise their jeeps right????? do any of them have ABS???? I didn't know. I thought maybe I was the only bonehead who bought a jeep with ABS and now I can't raise it. Jeesh.
Then I started thinking, what about all those Toyotas and other trucks people put 38's on. Some of them MUST have ABS systems. Do all jeeps have ABS, I don't know. thanks for the help.
(FYI: my BIL 's field of engineering is on trains, the long ones that run on tracks and say "choo choo" , in case your curious)

Hey! I just realized you called me an old fart! You aren't allowed to do that! Only I have that authority.

If changing the tire size will make the ABS fail, I have found my perfect lawsuit. I will work to make them fail on the trails and then get paid out the wazoo from Moab, Tire store, and who ever else i can think of. Then open my own Jeepen line of Jeeps to be sold. lol

X2,3, & 4. I've been battling mine for the past 2 weeks just to get 1 wheel balanced. They finally figured out how to make a weight stick today and then decided to raise my tire pressure from 27 to 35. No wonder it was shaking off it's wheel weights.

I had a problem at Wally World when I wanted to get "bigger" tires if you could them that, for my TJ. And I don't mean anything drastic either, I think I went from a 205/15 to a 235/15. A couple stores wouldn't do it, when I finally found one that would they told me all four of my rims were bent..lol. So they wouldn't warranty/guarantee anything. I mean come, all four? I did some four wheeling but nothing that crazy.
