What's offset?

I was looking for rims and i found 2 rims. Exactly the same but 1 was 6 offset and the other was -12 offset. Whats offset? and does it matter what the offset is?

Offset is how far off the center line the mounting surface of the wheel is. Backspace is how far from the inside edge of the wheel the mounting surface is. Offset isn't particularly important with a Wrangler. Backspace must be adequate to accommodate wider tires. The wider the tire, the smaller the backspace must be. Stock TJ's come with 5 or 5.5" bs.
The +6mm offset means the mounting surface is 6mm to the outside of the center of the wheel, iirc. Meaning more bs.

Edit: it's early, and the coffee hasn't taken effect yet, so the description for the +6mm offset may be opposite. Someone who's caffeine is functioning will correct me if needed...

You are correct IG about the +6mm example. Must not need that coffee as much as you might think.
