2008 Rubicon Failed emissions on Carfax - should i buy?

I'm in the market for a JK Rubicon and have been running the Carfax on them. I found one that failed emissions twice and immediately took it off my list. Since then I have seen 3-4 late model low mileage wranglers that have failed emissions then passed within a few weeks after. Why would an unmodified 2008 wrangler with 29,000 miles fail emissions and is this a red flag that I should pass on the vehicle?

It could fail over a gas cap not sealing propperly, or the OBD 2 plug not having a cover. Best is to reasearch why it failed before crossing it off.

What state did it fail emissions in?

Keep in mind that emissions testing is also visual and computer related. Depending on the state, a vehicle can fail emissions for having a modified exhaust, relocating a muffler in front of the axle, switching a single outlet muffler to a dual outlet, or having a computer light lit on the dashboard regardless of reasoning for it being lit. These are just a few examples.

In fact here in Arizona emissions testing does not even involve testing the emissions on vehicles made after a certain year. They do not even stick sensors into the tail pipe. All they do is plug into your CPU port and boom, done, pass.

They still check the fuel cap.

As far as I know fuel cap is all they check in PA. They charge 17 dollars to check a 10 dollar fuel cap. Anyhow if that's why it failed I would not worry about it. But I agree look into the reason why it failed.

Carfax is garbage anyway. Yeah they have a guarantee but read it first before you buy. IIRC you have to pay extra for the guarantee, and just about everything voids it.

My Ram had a 95 carfax. Pretty sure it was used as a sled puller and heavily modded before I bought it. I got about double book value into it.

Just some info to keep in mind before you make a purchase.
