Exclamation 2010 JK - Airbag deployment a fluke or bigger issue?

Was at a concert tonight. Came out to the parking lot afterwards. Loaded up my mobility scooter (as usual). Started the Wrangler up. Airbag warning light stayed on, started dinging.

At first it was a bit confusing, as I thought it was the seatbelt light (or maybe door). Before I could even close my door, BAM, the airbag deploys. Just outta nowhere. Passenger side. My brother was sitting next to me as the passenger. Luckily he was sitting back, and only got the back of a hand scraped a bit.

The noise was deafening. I have a lung disease (hence needing the mobility scooter) and use oxygen. Almost choked with the amount of smoke from the airbag. Had to open all the windows, and doors, to get it aired out. Took a while.

An officer at one of the exit doors heard it, and saw the smoke, came by to check on us.

Was this just a fluke? There is absolutely no damage on the Jeep at all. Never been in an accident. Got it brand new, and it's almost 2 years old (2010, JK, Unlimited, Rubicon). Or is this a potential defect I should be concerned about further? We actually have 2 Rubicons. Exactly the same except the paint (his and hers). Amazing what trading in an H2 can get you.

Seriously though, this did more then just scare the crap out of me, make me choke, etc. I'm definitely taking it to the dealer first thing in the morning. Anyone else have any experience like this? We were in Park. Didn't even get to the point of shifting out of Park.

Definitely a defect. Take it back to the dealer and more importantly contact Chrysler directly to let them know so that legally it's noted you've contacted them regarding it. It could be a bigger issue with other JKs too. Glad neither of you were hurt but if you'd had a small child who was sitting up front and wasn't buckled in yet when it deployed, they could have been killed.

Yikes!! That's a scary scenario, especially if you had been on the road. I've heard of this happening on other vehicles, usually through some sort of glitch or defect.

So far Chrysler has had an investigator take a look at my Jeep airbag issue. He told dealer he'd get back to them. I called the dealer this morning. Service Manager took the call when they heard it was me. He said they've never seen a bag just deploy on it's own like that. He's ordered parts, and received them, to repair it. But until Chrysler legal takes it off hold, they can't work on it.

Hopefully Chrysler or the dealer will call soon. Certainly need some assurances that this won't happen to my wifes. And hopefully not again on mine.

If it's any comfort, rest assured this is a very rare occurance.

I can honestly say for as long as I've been on this forum, I've never heard of it happening to another Jeep. Statistically, that's got to mean something.

It's rare. The smoke you're talking about is a powder used when the air bag is packed. It's non toxic, so they say.

A couple of questions:

Has the vehicle been modified in any way since it left the assembly plant?

That would include but not be limited to a lift, the front bumper area, the dash or any of the electronics?

If so, be prepared for what may be an unpleasant outcome.

To answer the question, the Wrangler is 100% stock at the moment. No modifications at all. And for that I'm thankful as I'm sure that would come up during the investigation.

Also, the dealer did say the smoke was non-toxic. But trust me when I say that had I kept the windows closed, not sure what the outcome would be. A third of my lungs are already gone due to a problem after pneumonia. Breating in smoke like that doesn't help.

Also, I have yet to take it off-road. Planning on doing a Jamboree event next year. So they shouldn't be able to say that's the issue either. I really hope this doesn't turn into a blame game.
