2012 vs 2013? Engine change?

Shopping for a 4 door Wrangler to replace my 2010 that got totaled last week.
Did I read somewhere that starting in 2013 there was an engine upgrade or something? Is it worth holding out for a 2013 if I can find one in my price range?

Probably need to keep my budget under $25k. $20k would be better and allow me to do some upgrades I want.

Any additional insights on shopping for one would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Tim in Virginia

Yes. If you can, I would suggest you look for a 2012 or newer, for the superior drivetrain.

I think they changed oil filters in '14.
'12 may have head issues.

2011 was interior change.. 2012 the 3.6 came out. 12's have the cylinder head issue, that FCA covers for 7 years or 100k miles or something like that.. cant recall the details.

10 years and 150,000 miles on the warranty. I would not worry about a 2012 or 2013 with a bad head. Heads are relatively easy to change and less $ then people think.

Yeah, the big changes were between 2010 and 2011 for the interior, and between 2011 and 2012 for the engine.

There were minor changes to both the interior and the engines since (the tweeters on the dash went from "tombstones" to flat, and there have been head and oil filter housing changes to the engines), but the major upgrades were with the 2011 model year on the interior and the 2012 on the engine.

I stand "partially" corrected.

The dash and center console changed in 2011 but the upholstery changed in 2013...seats n stuff.

2011 has new interior but same seats as 2007-2010

2012 got new 3.6 285hp engine (old was 200ish hp 3.8)

2013 got new upgraded seats to complete the interior overhaul.

Since then there has been small changes to the heads (no hp change) and small interior changes like the tweeters on the dash.

If you find a '12 it would have had the head go bad by now. They went bad around 20k. If not bad, then it likely wont

I searched for the cheapest brand new JK and/or JL for a year now. You guys must have all the luck finding $26k brand new. The cheapest I found was Sport at $35k OTD.
And so, if you find one, create a thread here QUICK so our fellow jeepers benefits. Must put the phone and contact person and the location of the dealership. I AM SERIOUS. I end up buying a used one because I can not afford $35k out the door (my house door).

My '12 Sahara has far superior seats to my '08 Rubicon.
As to the head on the '12, R4D4R seems to have the answer. Check the Carfax; mine was done in September of '12, and no more dealer visits for it since. I just bought it in July with 54k on it and I have no issues either.
I am glad they extended that warranty though. It may be 10/100 though, I will have to check again.

OTD is going to vary at every dealer because of different tax rates & doc fees..

$35k will get you into a Rubicon.

$26k is a basic Sport with zero options.

Inventory is getting thin, so I gave in and put a deposit down on a JKUR near Boston for $34.9k

You go there and they will tell you they just sold the last one on that price. That kind of game they play really irritates me. Not to mention the plane ticket for one way is crazy.

You are one of a kind my man! I just called the salesman and off the bat said when can I come and test drive?????? Did not even discuss any of the models they have on their lot.

If you do the math, OTD will be way over $35k to all of them

I was recently searching for newer/used JK. Search is now over as I just bought a 2013 yesterday. 40K miles, 6 spd, freedom edition.

I had previously drove a 2011 Rubicon with ~80K on it, was used well, but wasn't beat all to hell. Had the 3.8 obviously, and it was a dawg... Tremendously under-powered, as many suggested it might be. The hope was it being a 6 speed and a rubi, that it would ultimately be geared to where it would motor around the way I wanted. I literally stomped the thing while taking off from a stop sign, and probably maintained a rate of speed increase somewhere in the 0-60 in 20 seconds range...

I also drove a 2015 sport; very few options; 6 spd; had ~30k miles; also definitely had an exhaust leak, was in/around engine, ticked for maybe 5 minutes until motor warmed up. It didn't handle too well in my opinion.. the 3.6 seemed to have adequate power though....

I'm pleased with what I got so far. I'm glad I didn't settle for a 3.8. I also believe others that have the proper setup in that they (3.8s) can be just fine. I just experienced poor performance in the one I drove.

Looks like the bare bones $26k one I considered is gone now. It was at Criswell in MD. Cheapest they have now is $29.5k

There are JKU`s for 25- 26K - not many left since i last looked, but you have to check ALL the websites and search. End of month is better to buy.
