2014 Rubicon Gearing for Altitude

Hello all, I have a 2014 Rubicon Unlimited, automatic, on 37’s, and I am trying to decide between 4.56 and 4.88 gearing for my situation. I live in Colorado, and the Jeep lives between 6,000 and 8,500 feet, with plenty of hills. I am carrying some extra weight with skid plates, steel bumpers, but I won’t be towing. It does see off-road use.

I am planning a road trip with the Jeep (and my dog) that will entail a lot of highway miles, but still off road to hiking destinations. I am thinking of downsizing to 35” D rated tires for a more compliant highway ride for this trip, but want the flexibility to keep the 37’s. I won’t ever be going above 37” or below 35”.

I see a lot of opinions on this, and the charts suggest 4.56 as a mid range choice, 4.88 as a performance gearing, or for elevation. But will the 4.88 be congenial on the highway, or will I be better off with the 4.56? I’m looking for a balanced solution overall. The Jeep is currently geared 3.73, which is ridiculous, hence the re-gear. Thanks for the opinions on this.

Another vote for 5.13's if not 5.38's. I'm running 35's running 4.88's (manual) and the week we spent at 6000+ I was wishing for 5.13's.
