40's on aftermarket Dana 44 a new trend???

Just wondering if this is a new trend. I'm seeing a lot of JK's on instagram running 40's on Dana 44's. I've seen a few on a Ultimate dana 44, one on a ProRock, a couple on G2's and even on a stock dana 44. What gives? I would never run that big unless I'm sitting on 60's

People have been doing lift+tires and nothing else for decades. I think it may be happening more now, because Jeeps are more popular and there are more on the road than ever.

Plenty of threads about blown up differentials from people doing it without even knowing it was bad.

YUP!

I have no idea in the world what this rather immature "mall crawler" rubbish is about. Some form of neanderthal, put down? Why? I s there something wrong with wanting to make your jeep look good? Is it illegal? Aren't we ALL guilty of it in one way or another?

I spent $64,000 on my jeep and another $15,000 in aftermarket parts. I'll do snow, but I'll be dammed if I'm dumb enough to go smash that kind of money up on a bunch of rocks

Agree, seems at times if you don't rock crawl or hardcore off road, you don't have a right to own a Jeep. As you said, to each his own. And without regular folks. "mall crawlers.' "pavement princesses" we would NOT have this huge aftermarket parts market. Some of use do't live where you can RC or HC off road weekly.

Some people is tropical areas want a convertible SUV. Ad some, yes just really LOVE Wranglers and they look of having them personalized and done up. God for bid....

If I am lucky I can get to Off road parks and areas a few times a year. But I hate deep and nasty mud and it really mucks crap up. Why I am going to get a old YJ/TJ as a beater and mod hog.

Yup, I agree.
I bought my Jk used, and don't have any where that much $$$ in it.
I do snow, woods trails carefully, but I will be damned if I'm gonna go out and smash my shit up.
Hell, I didn't do that to my CJ2A or CJ5's back in the '70's, when I was in my early twenty's, I was smarter than that, why would I start that now?

Back then we did a ton of wheeling, and none of us smashed our stuff up, and we washed it when we came out of the trails too, not ride around for days with shit stuck all over to show everyone we were wheelers
No high lift jacks stuck all over our Jeeps either.
If we had 'em, we carried 'em in back, and put them back in the shed when we got home.
A few of us did have M8274's though.
And yes, we did use our Jeeps to go to the mall, and every place else we went too, still do

I don't know why everyone gets so wrapped up in what others do today, WTF
Some of these people that run their mouths constantly about mall crawlers have probably never left the pavement, who cares?

I believe the term mall crawler refers to a rig that is built for looks and done in a way with no attention to strength and performance and would most likely break if taken off road. Akin to a Japanese car that has an added muffler and some racing wheels that gets easily beat by the lowest ranking car in the BWM lineup.

If a person wants to build a vehicle for looks that's great and they should do what they want. If people get offended by a term I don't know what to tell them, maybe there is something going on there to look into. Maybe lighten up and not take things so seriously.

It's been used as a derogatory term way back to when I bought my YJ in 1987.........

The best way to exhibit that one doesn't care about others opinions especially unsolicited ones is probably to Not say anything in return, as a matter of fact in thread tools there is an ignore this thread choice that I find comes in handy for a lot of things.

It isn't unique to the Jeep forums. ALL the forums I have ever been on...
- LS1.com - Do you race your Camaro?
- HK.com - Do you shoot your MP5, SP89, PDW ?
- Bladeforums.com - Do you actually cut things with your custom Hinderer

Etc on and on.... Is it tiring, puerile and boring? Yes absolutely but it is the nature of groups who get together over a common interest and invariably they start to dick measure.
We (Men) are an infantile animal to be sure.

I love this post! Some think you are building yourself up as cool or a real off-roader. I think you are having fun and enjoying the forum friend like you would in person. I am shocked how thin skinned many commenting here are. Just my opinion. My friends rib each other all the time. You can comment how good my Jeep looks at the mall any time. The other thin skinned will have to deal with it.

I guess I'm a mall crawler then. I don't like going out with others and I avoid places where there are people and vehicles. You will never find me at any of these places. I see videos of this stuff, and it reminds me of Disneyland. - I've been to Disneyland and Magic Mountain and it's fun, just wouldn't do it very often. My thing is camping, hiking, and shooting and the Jeep is a means to allow me to do those things. I won't generally go out if those other things are not involved. I embrace my newfound mall crawlerness.

So true...

I love Jeeps and seeing what others do to them. If they want to build a rock crawler then cool. If they want to build one for looks or for beach riding, then that's also cool....

What I get a kick out of are the ones who make themselves out to be 4x4'ing studs and we all should worship the dirt their Jeep kicks up...

I learned long ago that tossing out insults says more about the person doing it than it does about those the insults are directed at..

Due to the fact that a lot of 37s are on the small side I think that has urged people to move up to 39-40” tires to get an actual 37”. Not many 37s that a true to actually 37”. And of course the fact that swapping from D44/37 combo to D60 you need 40s to get that lost diff clearance back.

I always thought the Dynatrac 44/60 hybrid front axle looked interesting. It's the 44 front center section with D60 outers. There's a lot of strength in that setup without losing as much ground clearance. With the high clearance 60 in the rear, a 37" tire would be a good all around combination.

What is the pumpkin ground difference between the D44 and these axles. Must still be at least 2” unless that housing is really shaved close to the ring gear. Only so small you squeeze it for that big ring gear.
