Air Dam

Yes, I know its a POS....

I'm going to install a new bumper this week and I need to remove the air dam first.

I tried to remove it the other day and what a PITA it was! 2 of the plastic bolts came out very easily, the rest....won't budge, no matter how gentle I was while trying to unscrew them.

I was just going to tear it off as I've read others have done...but, I thought, maybe it serves some kind of purpose?
From what I've read online, it seems that the main purpose for this piece of plastic is to help redirect airflow and reduce hood flutter and gives ya an extra few MPG....oh and protects the electronic sway bar gizmo if you have a Rubi.

Has anyone who has removed the air dam noticed a decrease in the MPG you get? Even if just a couple, I think it would be worth keeping the plastic on....with the prices of gas these days, I'll take all I can get!

Any other issues pop up once the air dam was removed?

Thanks!

Nope. Just drill out those plastic "screws" or tear it off. It's not protecting anything--just improves aerodynamics. I noticed nothing after I took mine off. Then get yourself a nice steel skid plate.

If you're gonna keep the air dam on--you can get those plastic fasteners at pep boys/Kragen/Napa/ Zone, they all carryem in their internal accessoriy section racks, for about $5 bucks/5 ea--

Easy way to getem off is just use a sharp chizel and hammer-POP right off __

I have read a few posts saying that without that or a skid plate, they had increased hood flutter.

Not if you pull the hood spring, or buy Daystar latchs--

I pulled the spring--No flutter, although I have a little gasket on the hood front "sill"-

I have had mine off since last December when I got my XHD bumper. No hood flutter at all for me. Spring is still there too.

^ Yeah that. Speaking of hood flutter I have experienced none. Saw a TSB a few weeks ago where Jeep was sending new hood latch kits to dealers to replace the latches on new Jeeps sitting on their lots. Makes me wonder if Jeep improved the design for the 2011s.

Ditto. (even the same colour Jeep )

My fuel consumption has slowly increased since I got mine, but then first I lifted it, then I dropped the air dam and stock bumper for an ARB bull bar.

So not really sure whether its motor wear changing it, or the other bits, but have lost maybe 1 to 1.5 mpg average (can still squeeze 22 to 23mpg on the highway at 60mph cruise). Nothing worth really worrying about, but since I keep notes its just interesting to see.

Don't take it off! It holds the Jeep together man! It'll all fall apart without it!

I did away with mine when I installed my xhd bumper. It looks a lot better and gives me better air flow to my aluminum ribbed high capitacy cooling pan! As does the 1 inch lift in front so it doesn't run nose down like a anteater. The SKID BAR also helps everything run cooler!
