am i being screwed??

so i was driving my 13 JKU(53kmiles) to work today and when i stopped at a store i noticed some coolant dripping onto the ground. My temperature gauge was slightly warm so i drove another 100 yards to a garage parking lot and called my jeep dealership as soon as they opened to see if it would be covered by warranty. they advised they couldnt tell without seeing it but it probably would so i had it towed there. I got a call about 3 hours later and was told my water pump, radiator, radiator hose, and thermostat were all broken and needed to be replaced. Only the water pump was covered by my powertrain warranty. Im no mechanic but i find it hard to believe that all of those parts failed at the same exact moment. I was quoted $1498(thats with a 10% discount) for radiator, hose, and thermostat. Any thoughts?? anyone heard of these 4 components failing at the same exact time

Agreed, very fishy. I've had all those parts go bad but never all at the same time. Also every time I've replaced a radiator it was do to a puncture from something outside the vehicle or from an accident.

While it may be true that all of those items are bad, keep in mind that many dealer service departments will "shotgun" parts at a problem.

They will basically replace any and everything that pertains to the problem you brought it in for so that it will not be likely to come back for the same problem.

As far as price, it sounds really fishy.

The most expensive part of the remaining 3 non-warranty items is the radiator which is around $100 for an aftermarket unit on Rockauto, or around $200 for OEM on Amazon.

Figure $400 from the dealer. The hose and thermostat are relatively cheap.

The other $$$$ is likely from a confiscatory labor charge.

I am going to have to say it is probable that it happened as the dealer stated. the 13 and 14's had thermostat housings that cracked and radiators that also cracked. My 14 had the radiator go out and the thermostat at the same time. I did the thermostat myself and my radiator was covered under my extended warranty. I had noticed pink residue at the end of my tstat for a long time and just ignored it and the radiator leak I could smell. prior to having these replaced it was rarely ever at the dealership. if you search this site for cracked radiator you find it is common on 13 and 14's.

I would get my free pump and tell them where to stick it.

What did they say caused the problem is there a hole in the radiator, blown hose ?
when did you start smelling the antifreeze??

its not hard to install a radiator, if your not handy any mechanic you know would probably be happy with 200 cash and as posted parts are probably 200-300

I told them to replace the pump and put my "broken" parts back on and I'll tow it out today. I've also contacted jeep customer service.

$200 labor? i presume that's at $100/hr labor rate? i can't see how replacing a radiator is more than 2 labor hours. luckily mechanics around here can be found for as low as $50/hr if you pay all cash

My Radiator and Thermostat failed at the same time on our '14, so I can believe it.

Radiator- $217 LINK
Thermostat- $25 LINK

So IMO take your free water pump and do the rest yourself

Sorry to hijack thread but just happened to stumble upon it. My 13 with 48k miles seems like it has been running hotter than normal but it's kind of intermittent. I don't have a coolant leak and do have some coolant in the reservoir. I'll take a 10-15 min drive, stop, and my fan will be running. Pop the hood to find a very warm engine bay. Then I'll make the same drive the next day and temps are normal. It has nothing to do with outside temps either because it will run hot on a day that's colder than a day that it ran normal temps. I have not seen the needle on my gauge go much past straight up and down so it's nothing too drastic but it's definitely been running hotter than normal. Could I have one of these problematic radiators, thermostats, water pumps on my 13?

I should have a resolution of some sort from jeep customer service on Monday. In the meantime I picked up a copy of my quote. Radiator $793 lower hose $323. Thermostat $237. Plus tax. All that is with a "10%" discount. I called 2 other dealerships myself and they quoted me at $800 for everything installed. I'm now day 3 without a jeep. My thoughts are they figured they had me by the balls since I couldn't drive my jeep out of there so they tried to get one over on me.

Also I was not experiencing any temperature issues leading up to this.

Warranty or not, those prices are ridiculous. I hope can share that quote with customer service.

Like it has been said. The thermostat is like 30 bucks (and I got it from the dealership). I would get my jeep back and run. My friend got his thermostat replaced under warranty. He knew mine was having the same issue and asked how much it would be to replace it out of warranty. The told him it was about 200 installed.

...a fraud complaint? Dealers can charge whatever amount they want. Either do business with them or don't. Nothing criminal here.

Sure it may not be "criminal". They know at this point I would have to pay for it to be towed out. So because they have me by the balls they should be able to charge a ridiculous labor rate? For example, $323 plus tax for a lower hose?

For comparison sake, I just had a broken plastic thermostat housing and thermostat replaced yesterday at a Jeep dealership. Parts were $48 plus $30 in replacement coolant and $153 in labor.

That dealership is screwing you BIG TIME! I recently replaced my thermostat and it cost me $28 for the thermostat. The lower radiator hose costs $34.49 at Autozone and a new Mopar radiator is $244 at Quadratec. The thermostat and radiator hose are very easy to replace yourself.

dude get towing insurance its like 20 dollars a year. its not criminal , just like its not criminal to charge you $10 for a beer at a ball game.. get it out of there.. how can the radiator and the hose fail at same time , this might just be a new hose/thermostat.. are all 4 parts really bad or did they just suggest changing everything out shotgun approach.. figure out where its leaking is kinda paramount , ,or change everything out. you can test the radiator.

I assume that when they did a cooling system pressure test, this Jeep leaked all over the place? I think not.

Here's a description of how it is done. Maybe this dealership doesn't have one, so was taking shots in the dark at the customer's expense.
