another cb question. center console mount

I just ordered a uniden bearcat 980. I'm pretty sure it will fit inside the center console. I've read before that this is not a desirable location to mount a cb, but i don't understand why. It seems like a great place to keep it out of the way and out of sight. It's going in a 13 Wrangler unlimited Rubicon. Thanks in advance for any help.

Center console if your your beer and ice. CB's don't like ice when it melts.

I think its just a personal preference. I looked at just about any pic I could find on cab installs and finally decided to mount mine on a overhead console. Its easy to reach and doesn't obstruct vision in any way. Figured I'd chime in since I just installed this past Friday after numerous hours researching.

I have the Tuffy security console and it's made to mount a CB there.

(pic from their web site)

When I mounted my CB I didn't want to drill any holes or cut anything. So I rigged up a mount in shop class that would bolt on to the side of the center console by the transfer case shifter.

Took a piece of thin metal and used a drill press to bore out the center hole for the console bolt, then drilled two more holes for the CB mount bracket. Mounted my fabricated bracket to the console and then the CB bracket to it. Works perfect.

I hope you measured in there first....

I JUST ordered my CB stuff on Saturday. I too am going in my 13 JKUR console but I bought a compact CB. I was looking at the Cobra 25LX, but even that, as a mid size unit would not fit in there without hacking it up. I think that 908 is full size. I would check your measurements again so you are not surprised.

Now, if you are electrically inclined, you can mount the body under a seat and "remote" the face. Just looked at some pics and seems like around 40-50 wires to do so..... That is what I may end up doing some day with a full size CB if the compact doesn't suit my needs.

Here is a review with good pics of the guts.

I know it'll fit according to these measurements
CBRadioMagazine.com - Uniden Bearcat 980 SSB

I am mainly just curious if there is a reason it shouldn't go in there.

I mounted my CB inside the center console and I love it in there. I did install a small speaker on the front of the console to hear better. Works great!
