Another soft top question

Recently purchased my first wrangler and am looking to buy a soft top for the summer. I found a used top with everything included on CL for a good deal and am wandering what, if anything, I'd have to change for it. Mine is a '15 JKU Saraha and the top is from an '09 JKU. I know on earlier models the windshield channel is slightly different and either needs replaced or tweaked to be compatible with newer models. Is the '09 one one of the years with the non-compatible channels? If so is there anything else different and/or would need replaced? Thanks in advance for any help

Skip it unless the price is really low. The newer tops are way better than the 07 - 09 tops.

07 models originally had a plastic piece in the header that was crap and would warp and not get a good seal on the windshield. Got changed to metal by 08. Other than that, any jk soft top will work with any year jk. Obviously as long as it's 2 door on 2 door and 4 door on 4 door.
07 to 09 had plastic clips on the sides of the top the tuck under the door frame where as 10 and up use a cable to hold the sides of the top tight against the door frame. Pros and cons to both. The cable style folds easier but the cable can stretch and you can get a bad seal above the door when traveling at speed and the vacuum sucks the top away from the frame and you get more wind noise.
Other difference is the size of back window. 10+ is a little wider.
Parts you should get with the top so you can install. Frame and canvas top. Door frames (4 pieces on unlimited). Knobs that hold door frame to roll bar (6 on unlimited) 4 screws for mounting frame to roll bar. 2 side windows. 1 rear window. Rear window bar and 2 bar retainer clips the mount on the tub for the rear window bar to latch in to.

Another option is the spring assist tops that started in 2013 that have springs built into the frame near where the frame bolts to the roll bar that make lifting and lowering the top a little easier for 1 person. I had bad luck with the one of these types I've bought of CL so don't have anything good to say about those. I'm sure mine was just F'ed up in some way.

Hope that helps a little.

The guy wants $450 for everything but might be able to talk him down a little. Thoughts on the price?

I paid $400 for mine off CL. It was from an '08. However the only reason I jumped on it was because it was khaki fabric which I like because it's different than 90% of other JKUs out there.

Mine is fine for what it is. I think the older ones are more likely to be noisy than anything. Actually that reminds me, I need to take my rubber mallet to the front lip of mine again to quiet it down some before our beach trip...

I think it was on the original jk so that would be '07...

Price seems high for an '09. I recently bought a '14 for 350 off CL. Replaced my '08 top. Not a huge difference, but not having to clip the sides of the top is nice. Be patient and keep looking. All years will fit each other. Seems like the door surrounds are the difference as someone else mentioned.

I have a 15 JKU and bought one off an 08. However it was in good shape. I have no problems at all. Paid 350. Very happy. Or just save up and buy a cool trek top for 800. That's what I would do. New tops are far better today than they were. Just make sure u get ALL hardware. Rear bar brackets that mount on back and make sure all zippers are in good working order.

Well I finally found a newer top for a decent deal. Unfortunately the previous owner wasn't very gentle storing it and rolled the back window up very poorly. Now the window has all kinds of waves and dimples and such. Any suggestions on how to get them out?

Waves and dimples are not too bad. Being in place on the Jeep will help the waviness even out just from the sunshine hitting over a week or two. The better question is how scratched are the windows. Some people have been able to carefully buff out minor scratches, but if it is real bad keep watching Clist for a new one

What's the big difference between older and newer soft tops? I bought the duel top option and the material on my soft top looks completely different than older models.

The side windows are fine. The back on the other hand is pretty scratched

I had a 2013 JKU and like the newer cable style top....now I have a 2008 and hated having to clip the top into the door surrounds. It's quicker to raise and lower the top when you don't have to get out and mess with the tabs/clips. Also, the newer tops have a bracket that mounts to the roll bar but the top mounts into that bracket....easy to remove the whole top if you want to go topless. I bought a JKU top off CL for $350 that had just come off a 2015 with 40 miles.....clear sides and rear which is what I like sine my half door uppers are also clear. Newer top style is the way to go!!! CC
