**GIANT THANK YOU TO JERRY BRANSFORD FOR ALL HIS HELP WITH THIS!!**
Well hey, I swapped my rear axle shafts yesterday in my D35 from stock to chromoly; took 12 hours, 6 beers, and approximately 250 swear words. I think this is pretty good for a non-gearhead.
The gear oil that flooded out was dark, I mean DARK, and smelled like something from the pits of Hell, ugh man it was awful, but I sprayed the shiznatch out of the diff with carb cleaner and scrubbed it down nice.
There were only two hiccups in the entire project:
First was finding something to whack the bearing and seal in, I had to buy a 1.5" socket head that I might never use for anything again, and even then it wanted to warp the seal, it took a while to seat those things.
Second was a total NOOB mistake. As I went to replace the left side axle shaft, I inserted it, climbed back under to attach the C-clip....and OMG its too frikken short. So yeah I freaked out thinking I had ordered wrong axles, that Alloy USA had shipped wrong axles, etc. I was pissed. Then hit hit me, the rear diff is offset to the right, the shafts are different lengths.
But its all good now, runs great, and a creaking sound Id been hearing for a long while now is gone, Im thinking one of the factory shafts was going bad in some way.
Next is the lift. DUN dun DUUUUUUUUNNNNNNN!
