I finished it today! I had watched several You-tube how-to videos; gathered tons of info here (Thanks to many of you!); and realized there were several ways to make this work...some much more complicated than others with added electronics (Adaptors and such). This was the simplest, easiest way I saw. The only hassle was marrying the camera to the mount. I may or may not change the way I did it in the future. I also did like the side benefit of the JScan program allowing me to turn on my choice of lights as DRL, but I did not use many of the JScan options. I did enjoy raising the RPM on the motor temporarily by just using the app. That was the first thing I tried to see if my Panlong reader would work. Maybe if I get a bigger set of tires, I will use it to change the tire diameter to correct the speedometer. Great little app to avoid having to get the dealer to turn on your camera or other things.
Here is the complete package for my 2015 JKU with 730N radio (I don't have any experience with the 430N radio):
$10.98 OBDII Reader
https://smile.amazon.com/Panlong-Bluetooth-Diagnostic-Scanner-Android/dp/B00PJPHEBO Connect this first, via bluetooth. If you have an iPhone, you are on your own. No Apple products here, so no advice. This is NOT on the approved Jscan list of readers, but I had it, tried it, and it worked. I used this on my 2003 S10 for a year or so.
$20.99 JSCAN phone app to enable camera
JScan ? OBD JScan ? Mobile Jeep Diagnostic Tool Download the free app from App store (Very minimal data, and no changing things until you activate your license), then buy your license on phone (1 or more VIN numbers...you can buy multiple licenses), then connect with your OBDII Reader. Use the app to allow it to read VIN and activate your license for your VIN. I used this to turn on the (non-existent) camera to make sure this was going to work, before I bought anything else. I'm a skeptic. After I enabled the rear camera, when I put it in reverse and took off the parking brake, I got the black screen on the radio with the initial few second display of "Check Entire Surroundings", so I knew it was working. The radio also now has the added rear camera menu, so I could turn it on or off from the screen and no longer needed the JScan app (or the reader) for that purpose. It worked easily.
$31.50 Camera mount for tire Ebay
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-Wrang...t-RC1-RC3-Rydeen-Roadgear-Mobile/123315673539 Just like in the Alpine $189 kit, and even comes with an extra piece in case you need to move the camera to the side for non-stock wheels.
$1.20 3 - 5/8" E- clips for locking the camera mount to tire carrier - Ace Hardware I figured these would be easier to remove without destruction, compared to pushnuts. You really don't want to fight with the mount moving around when you are messing with the spare tire.
$21.12 Simple Connector plug for my 730N radio. Alpine w/4’ wire lead Amazon
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XYSMB7N This plug has a 4 foot lead, so I disassembled the dash, installed it as my first step, and ran it to the passenger kick panel to await the camera. Quadratec has them on sale now, but with shipping, they were close to the Amazon price, and Prime was 2 day delivery free. The Ebay versions seem t have shorter wires, and someone here in the forum convinced me not to cheap out, just in case. I didn't want to risk bricking the radio to save a few bucks!
$13.99 Camera Amazon
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VXPN4SV Camera comes with a long video cable that had about 2 feet or so more than I needed to run it down the passenger side, zip-tied and under the carpet. The extra wire is laying folded under the carpet, under the sill, on the edge of the passenger floor. I had zip ties, so their cost isn't listed here.
$0.80 Misc small screws for camera mount. You will have to fabricate a bit to marry the camera to the mount. I flattened a piece of the mount and then drilled 2 holes. I bought 2 small bolts, 2 washers, and 2 nuts to hold the plate in place. Be sure the camera is right side up! I may change this later when I have access to more tools to fabricate a simpler mount, but it works for now and is adjustable. Ace Hardware
$3.98 2-pin trailer connector - O'Reilly's I used this to connect the power plug inside the right tail light just to have a cleaner install and allow me to easily remove the tail light assembly. Cut it in half. I ran the red shielded power lead to the white wire w/green stripe (12v power to backup light); the white ground to one of the black wires. I soldered the wires and taped them. I also had to run an extra 2 feet of wire, as the power cable that came with the camera was not long enough to reach the reverse light. That end got the other half of the connector. See a You-tube video for running this wire through the tailgate and the video cable down the passenger side. There is no other power connection, and you can ignore the little red wires on the ends of the video cable. Totally unnecessary for the install. The Radio now knows there is a camera (From the JScan change made), so when it is in reverse and the brake is off, it triggers the radio to turn to the camera all on its own. You just need the camera to get power, and the obvious place to use is the reverse light...you don't want to power the camera full time!
$103.76 Total cost for rear camera (if you don't already have the OBDII reader and JScan.)
Again, mounting the camera to the wheel mount will require some ingenuity. That part isn't simply plug and play. I hope this helps someone else. Feeding the wire through the tailgate was not nearly as simple as the YouTube videos made it seem. I have extra scratches on my arms and hands!
