Backup camera for 430 radio

Got me a backup camera for my JKU, and ran RCA cable up to 430 head unit. Come to find out my 430 does not have a RCA hook up on the radio. Anyone else run into this on their install?

Almost everyone runs into this. A good existing reference could be found at: https://www.wranglerforum.com/f274/di...l#post30056810

An alpine is not a u-connect or do they use the same adapter?

Yup you'll need one of those adapters. However you also need to either flash the Jeep or use a module to enable the use of the back up camera.

If you want to go the module route, I'm selling mine on eBay.

Thanks everyone. Ordered my cable today. Already got appointment from Jeep dealer to flash radio, didn't remember about adapter. Had subscribed to another post about the camera installation, but must have skipped over the adapter part.

Hi,

If you don't mind me asking, what is your dealerhip charging you to flash the radio?

Thank you,

If you find a place in our area that will do it for a decent price can you PM me? The tech I spoke to over the phone at Elway in Claremont said they're not familiar with it.

I know that HB Jeep does a lot of mods on jeeps.

That's not bad at all, hope I get similar pricing from dealerships in my area so I can pull the trigger on this mod!

Thank you,
Luis

The dealer I bought the Jeep from wanted $150. I told them no way so they said they'd do it for $75. I told them that was still a lot and so they said they would do it for free if I give them all "5 stars" on an online survey. Lol.

Ya I bought mine there and was impressed with their off road shop. But they're about an hr away and their service dept is really backed up. Not worth waiting around for hours just to flash. I have young kids so I prefer to spend my limited free time with them. Ill check out a few spots closer and see what the prices are. Ill let you know if I find something good. Maybe I can work out a deal if we both get it done.

Thanks everyone for the help. Got my radio flashed. Ended up costing me $45. The backup camera works great. I got one where the angle of the camera head adjusts so it will point down more. Gonna buy me a couple more and put in a left turn camera and maybe a right turn camera for help with towing my camper.

So, which camera did you get and are you thinking about using the same one for right and left sides?

I went with this one. I'm gonna use it for turn camera also, because it allows you to get rid of lines for backing. Little more expensive than most on amazon, but this one allows you to adjust the angle and I liked that. The other one I tried pointed up too much.

That's a nice looking little cam! I wonder if it can be wired to come on with your turn signals? GF has a 2016 Accord that has a blind-spot cam that pops on when you turn on the right turn signal.

Where did you end up mounting that camera? Looking into this upgrade when my JK arrives pretty early and this is possibly one of the cleaner looking options in my opinion.

Almost sounds like my dealer when I bought my Jeep, which I did because they gave me the most $$ on my trade in and then matched the lowest price I found on a JKU. When I go in for my 3rd free oil change I'm going to ask how much to flash as I want to add the back up camera.

That's what I did. I was in for other service and already had an appointment. So I asked them if while I was there for service anyway if they could flash it. That's when they told me the cost and I was able to talk them down

Silver4,

I ended up mounting mine dead center of my back bumper above my hitch (mainly for my camper). Easy to hook up and set up. But the camera doesn't look centered on the screen. I think when they put the lines in it at the factory, they put the lines wrong. But it's ok.

I'll try and post a picture of it later.

So all you needed was the camera and that adapter thing and the radio flash? I am guessing there is an RCA plug on the camera and a hot wire to turn the camera on. Does that white plug adapter go into the back of the radio? any other wires to deal with? was it hard getting the radio out? I have a local dealer that will flash it for $92. Says the Jeep has to be "reconfigured" to accept the camera. If I can get er done for <200 I am in.

This first pic is the camera as it is flush mounted in the rear bumper. Notice that it is center of my hitch.

This second picture shows the camera at night time with only the reverse lights lit.
Notice how the lines aren't exactly centered.

Other than that, no problems so far.

If I clip one of the wires then I can get rid of the lines and use it for turn camera.

Brian

Yup, that's all I needed. Went with the $29 camera and the adapter was $20. The camera had a 12ft (maybe 15 ft) rca cord with the male end on it.
Yes the white adapter plugs into the radio. Easy to take radio out, plug in adapter, and plug back in (10 minutes maybe). There was enough power cord so splice into power right behind brake light.

It was just that simple.

Thanks for the info. Just hard to pull the trigger on the unknown. I think I'll get the stuff all installed so I'll know if the flash worked. Does the camera and adapter come with any instructions? I am sure there are plenty of instructions about radio removal here on WF.
