Bug shield

Does the bug/ stone deflector on the hood really work. I have been getting a lot of bugs on the windshield and I was thinking about getting this. I am not crazy about the way it looks but if it works I would definitely consider it. All opinions appreciated. Thanks.

They work great for the guy that sells them, not so great in practice though.

They will protect the leading edge of your hood from dents and paint chips but that's it.

They will do that while the shield itself wears the paint off the hood where it hits when highway wind resistance pushes it back against the paint.

I am curious about an alternative that may be available on the market to help with rock dings. My 98 ranger pickup had a clear application that ran the course of the bottom of the body, similar to where we would put rock guards on our keeps. It was obviously an adhesive based strip but was clear enough to see the paint of the body without any discrepancy from the non coveted portion. Is there a product like this that could be used in place of the wind guards to prevent dings?? Does anyone know what I am talking about??

Rock dings won't show at all after a few trips down some trails.... Pin striping hides them very well.
