Can someone explain this?

Looking for 15" wheels w/ Duratrac 33x12.5R15. I've seen people run this exact setup before on JKUs.

I have a JKU with the 17s and 255s. The response I got from the tire place is:

Quote:
Your factory 17" tires carry 2458lbs at the recommended operating pressure and unfortunately all the 33x12.50R-15 tires have a maximum load carrying capacity of 2205lbs which falls short of what the manufacturer recommends. Safety is one of our top priorities and we will not sell you a tire that does not at least meet the load carrying capacity of the factory tires.

What are your thoughts on running a 16" package?
I really didn't plan on running 16"s, but would consider it.

Thoughts?

EDIT: If I opted for the stock 16" tire package those come with Goodyear Wrangler ST 225/75R16. From Goodyear, those are rated at 1,984 lbs (if i'm looking up the correct tire that comes on the Wrangler). If a Wrangler can come with those or with my 255s why would a Duratrac that can do 2205lbs not be recommended?

They're covering their ass and won't sell you tires rated lower than OEM. Given your location is this by chance a Town Fair Tire? If so, run. They're hacks.

In reality, you're fine I think with the tire you want. 4400 lbs per axle is far more capacity than pretty much any JKU could ever weigh.

It wasn't Town Fair it was DTD. I figured it was just covering themselves but I've seen them sell the exact setup to another member on a JKU and even linked to his post so I didn't understand why it wasn't OK now.

All those big chain places are full of weird policies not based on the slightest bit of reality. If they won't sell the pkg to you I'm sure a local shop will be happy to.

Try contacting Matt the DT rep on here. I private messaged him a while back about putting 33x12.50/R15's on my JKU to replace my 255/75R17's. He sent me links with a list of wheels and tires that he guaranteed to fit my Jeep.

I haven't ordered them yet, but I plan on contacting Matt when I do. They offer forum members a $50 discount when you order through DTD, so I figure if he tells me they will fit, he can push the order through for me, along with the discount.

Matt was who I contacted. Waiting to hear back from him on the reasoning considering the 16" package that comes factory stock is even less at 1982 lbs than what I'm looking at with the 15" and 33" Duratracs.

I'm just trying to understand.

The more I thought about it the more it made sense to go to the 16" wheel. Now i'm just waiting on a quote.

I would guess it's not the tire store making the rules...
the northeast states have a tendency to 'over-legislate' and the tire store is probably being forced to do that

Just go the online route. I went through DTD and got the 5 in that size mounted, balanced and shipped for free with the tire protection (probably would do without next time. Total out the door was $1500 and change. No reason not to

You should be fine with those tires on your Jeep. I know there are plenty of people that run those tires. Are you looking or just tires or wheels and tires? We can also help you out if you need it.

Jeremy
