I finally had chance to fully flush the cooling system on my 17 last night. Since it's late January, I couldn't do the Prestone flush additive. Says you can't run it when temps drop below freezing. So I just used hose and flushed with water. I also used a shop vac to blow air through the system to get the water fully out before I refilled it and ran it.

Sadly the next day, it's still not pumping real hot from the driver's side vents.

Few things:

There was a ton of the sludge in the reservoir tank. I collected it all in a container for testing.

There was also a fair amount of sand like material that came out in the coolant. The container I used to collect it in had it stuck to the sides even.

I think the heater core has a low flow issue at the end of it. Why the crap collects there and why it runs cool but will still push hot when the engine is cranking. Bad design maybe.

Also, I fully switched to non-Mopar coolant. Way cheaper and, with all due respect, the factory coolant is the reason why I'm having to do this on a nearly 3 year old vehicle.

It took a hair over 10 quarts to fill. So I think just about all of the old coolant is gone. I presume there's a bit of the crap globbing up the driver side of the core still.

Was thinking to run a small hose down into the core so I can blast out the end of the core rather than replacing. Maybe 1/8 rubber hose connect to my garden hose so I can get some pressure in there.

The two lines to the core are easy to access.

The crap in the coolant seems to stiffen up when cold. Why I think the power flush from the dealership would help a lot as it pushes heated liquid through to clean the system.

Funny enough, there are rumors that the OEM coolant has a stop leak additive from the factory. Here's what the Mopar stop leak additive looks like:

Here's what it does:

Quote:
Conditions cooling system
Inhibits rust and corrosion
Lubricates water pump seals
Genuine OEM Chrysler part
Helps control electrolysis
Kinda looks like sand, no?

Mopar Coolant Leak Detection Dye (1/4 oz.)

I just took an ultraviolet light and yellow tinted glasses and gave my radiator a quick glance from all sides.

I either do not have a leak or they did not include leak detection dye in my 2016 from the factory.

Going to add an 1/4 oz. today.

I have added coolant at least once since owning this 2016 model.

Be careful which leak detection dye you get. Amazon had the wrong part number paired with the product I am showing above

LEAK DETECTION - Chemical Catalog Lookup

some are for AC and some engine oil.

One is for HOAT and the other is for OAT.

I have a 2017 with 25000 miles. Wife just noticed about an ounce of drops in my garage as I headed out for a 2 1/2 her drive out of state. Just went out to see no drips under the Jeep, but the reservoir was a few ounces low and the coolant looked dirty, rusty.
Is this condusive to others here?

I have a 2014 with 22,000 miles. I have not had any issues yet but will keep an eye out for leaks. Glad i saw this thread. I did get an airbag call notice though. I'll get that take care of in a few weeks.

Called my local dealer and told the teenager there my problem, she set up an appointment for a few weeks. I said I`d like to speak with the manager and called me back saying he wants my car there this Monday as it could be the transmission? Said with all the different colors of fluids and the change in colors, he wants to be sure what it is and correct it.
I`ll post back afterwards.

Peace

Yup, so they put a new radiator in my Jeep. Though somewhat illusive of my questions, said basically, the radiator is made bad and has nothing to do with the contaminated coolant.

I have to read more of this thread to understand the progression of this problem from our members here. But the fact that radiators are failing for this long sure seems like a 'Class Action Lawsuit' to me.

Add me to the leaking radiator. Havent had it a month. 2017 sport. Bought from a dealer with a tad under 36,000 miles. Now at 36,300 something. Thought I smelled anti freeze and thought it was just a thing. Started googling and found im not alone.

No leaks on the floor. Had to add about 3/4 qt to get to the min line on the resorvoir. Left it at that

When I see 2016-2017 JKs being sold @ dealers with less than 36k ....

2 things come to mind

1. Radiator leaks/Heater core issues/casting sand
2. Oil cooler leaks

Did it have 2 previous owners or just 1?

I bought my 2016 with only 13.5k on it and the radiator fluid was low but I didn't know about these issues then.

I topped off the reservoir and hasn't been an issue in 14,000 miles. I check it weekly.

I am ordering my Stant coolant system pressure tester tonight.

I added a quart after 14k. I am going to pressure test it to satisfy my curiosity.

Someone want to save me from reading all 23 pages (of mostly "include me")? I saw this a while back and never kept up.

I have a 2016 with 87k. When I got it inspected last Feb, they told me they saw signs of leaking coolant, so I took it to the dealership.

First they replaced the radiator. Soon after I started seeing coolant on the driveway, but it didn't last long, and they insisted it hadn't leaked since being replaced.

Then the heat on the driver side was barely working, so they replaced the heater core.

Then the heat on the driver side, again, was barely working, so they replaced the radiator again.

Then I was getting this high pitched pressure release sound intermittently when using AC. They said freon was low, but it kept making that noise.

Soon, on a 9hr trip down to OBX, the AC gave out completely. It was a sweaty ride down on a 90 degree day, but luckily I took the top and doors off for the week we were there. But on the ride back, it was an even hotter, sweater ride home on a 98 degree day...

They said it was the compressor, and replaced it.

It kept making that sound, so I took it back, and also pointed out another leak. Now they replaced 2 lines they had apparently split the last time they messed with everything.

Still hearing the sound..... Finally, 10 months later, they top off the freon and coolant, sound goes way, heat has worked all winter, and hopefully the AC works this spring.

Think I qualify?

Well had my Radiator replaced today at the dealership. 2 months after oil cooler failed and 4 months after a bad radiator cap.Which again was a MOPAR part and failed. 45,700 miles on it and lucky I have MAX CARE. yeah @JeepCares and FCA. Thera are NO factory issues with these Wranglers. This is official my worst care yet reliability wise.
1. Jeep Wrangler
2. Jeep Cherokee XJ
3. FORD Explorer

Notice something? 2 Jeeps and all AMERICAN cars.
My Honda, 2 Subarus and VW where all very reliable.

I hear you. I don't even do the Jeep wave anymore out of frustration with all the issues myself and others are having. The complete lack of ownership Jeep/Chrysler takes for these problems is beyond me.

This Jeep has now cost me more in bullshit repairs in the nearly 3 years and 12,000 miles I've had it, than my F-150 cost in the over 13 years and 121,000 miles of ownership. At this rate the Jeep will cost more to repair these "factory problems" than my Chris Craft did in normal maintenance and misc. repairs. A Jeep's repair cost should not be on par with, or on pace to exceed a boat when un-modded and daily driven. This money was supposed to be for upgrades to mud. Pathetic!

100%. Everything is like this now we (most) consumers like it. Expect its more cheap stuff. Cars and especially Jeeps are NOT cheap anymore

How many 2012+ owners have not experienced radiator issues? Percentage? Is it 100% failure rate I.e. not if but when?

Doesn't make much sense to even try answering that, because you're talking up to 6 years difference and up to maybe 100K-range differences in mileage, and there's no way to guess if any given example will pop tomorrow.

But I'm pretty much expecting it and keeping an eye open.

My 2017 with 40k on it just started seeping radiator fluid. Looks like it will be getting a new radiator that isn't covered under warranty soon. I'm hoping it doesn't end up being having more problems like I read on this thread. I see some solid material in the reservoir so I'm worried now.
