I’m thinking of upgrading my Dana 30 to prorock 44. What else do I need to purchase?

If your upgrading to a PR44 I assume it’s because you have or will have larger tires. Have you already regeared and upgraded brakes. What lift do you have.

#3 ·
How much lift will determine 2 things...the high steer bracket and the standard or unlimited housing...do yourself a favor and have it built with new ball joints and get the upgraded axle shafts....choose your locker and gearing....then you just have to move your knuckle and bearing unit over which I'd just put new bearing units on so everything is new.....swap your brakes and your done...

You'll have to have the rear axle regeared to match the gearing in the PR44 if you decide to go with a different gear ratio.

I’ll tell you what I have and let me know if I need to add or change:
4.88
Rear tru-trac
Teraflex monster front and rear Adj TB
All 8 Teraflex Alpine adj CA
Teraflex 2.5 lift with a 1in coil spacer all the around.
Rancho 9500 shocks
Falcon SS
On 38’s

Soon to get:
3.5in MetalCloak springs
Falcon 3.3 shocks
Yeti tie rod and flip drag link
Artec truss and c-gusset kit

You’re not going to need the truss and c-gussets with a PR44.

You’re going to need a carrier for the front. I’d recommend a selectable locker such as an Eaton (electric) or ARB (air) or OX (various options). An OX with a manual cable actuator probably would be easiest and cheapest, particularly if you’re doing your own work.

Still way down the road for me but on my list as well.

I've been looking at the assembled package form Northridge. There is no mention of Standard/Unlimited housing or tube wall thickness options on the Northridge site. Are these options only available for bare housings direct from Dynatrac? I spent a few min on the Dynatrac site and didn't see these options there either.

Whats the difference in Standard vs Unlimited housing?

So I played with the options on the Dynatrac site and my build ended up at just under $6k. Wow!! I know I would need a new DS. I am probably going to get Adams 1310. I would need to regear and maybe e-locker. But do I need new knuckles? RCV? I off-road but I’m not a die hard off roader. And I like to be able to gradually add parts over time.

Every time that I have looked at the Dynatrac I realize how close it is in price for hybrid tons, or even tons...

Seems like a lot of cash for only 37s.

Ah, but here’s the dilemma, to future-proof the 1 ton purchase for larger tires it’s desirable to have a wider axle for clearance. So now you also need a rear axle. I went through this same exercise.

A PR44 has great resale value if one decided later to go to 1 tons. The good news is a used PR44 for sale is rare. When I posted mine for sale the phone was ringing off the hook (I love saying that even though it doesn’t apply anymore). A guy in Minnesota bought mine sight unseen and had it shipped out from Arizona. Not so sure some of the odd-ball hybrids will be that easy to sell.

I did a G2 Core 44 axle, RCV shafts, 4.56 gears (because that's what I already had in the Jeep) and an ARB locker for just about $5K. I added in new unit bearings for about $200 and installed it.

It's a beast and I'm beating the crap out of it.

RCV's eliminate the U Joint bind as they are heavy duty CV's. They are also thick shaft 35 spline chromoly axle shafts. If properly maintained, they are virtually indestructible.

If building a rock crawler, go RCV axle shafts.
