Discount Tire vs Discount Tire Direct

I am tire shopping and I like my local Discount Tire shop but I want to get the best price. How can I purchase through DTD and still get all the benefits of the certificates, rotations and balancing through local DT? Not having to pay the sales tax through DTD is significant.

Also does, DT allow you to purchase your own wheels and bring them in with you for new tires?

Thanks!

DT will probably discount the price of the tires to offset the tax savings, you should just call and ask if they can match the OTD price. Even though DTD includes free shipping, it isn't really "free", its just built into the cost of the tires. Your local DT doesn't pay for shipping in the same way, they have a huge truck from the supplier dropping off hundreds at a time. There is a lot of markup built into the cost of heavy bulky items like tires to account for the free shipping.

My nearest DT is like 80 miles away or I would use them more often, they are a good company. The last few times I bought tires I used TireBuyer.com, they have great prices and you have a choice of local installers with prearranged prices, so no surprises after its too late. Very easy to work with and super fast free shipping if you use one of their recommended installers.

@Discount Tire (Matt), here on this site, hooked me up with an amazing price on wheels/tires shipped to my door. Mounted, balanced, and ready to install with certificates and lug nuts. Great guy and super easy to work with.

Can you get free rotations and balancing at local Discount Tire store with this deal? Also do you have to get replacement with certs through website or can you go to local store?

I ordered everything through PM's here on this site. Matt from Discount Tire, once everything was agreed upon, wrote up an invoice and sent it to me. I then called him for payment and everything was shipped to my door. Free rotations is something DT offers to everyone, not just current customers, so I don't think that's an issue. As for the certs, I'm not 100% where I would be able to get replacements, and hopefully I won't have to find out . Shoot @Discount Tire a PM and he should be able to answer any questions/beat any prices that you find.

Are you able to ship the tires only to the local store and have your local shop install/balance the tires for you?

I would assume so. But typically, as I found out in the past (prior to my jeep days), if you can get DTD (or any tire shop) to a certain price for tires shipped to your door. Take that price to your local DT and they will match/beat it and save you the hassle of having to have them shipped there. I've never found a price on tires that wasn't matched by my local DT from any competitor whether its local or online.

This is actually a really helpful thread. Looking at tires myself, I'll have to PM him and spend my savings on more Jeep Parts!

On eba,y discount tire has $100 off purchases of over $400. They'll let you make two $400 purchases and you'll get $100 off each, plus free shipping.

Discount tire will match prices of DT direct or any other site however they will not match the price without taxes. They will match the price then charge you the taxes. It's the law. As for lowering the price so much that even when charging taxes it is the same that would cause them to lose a lot of money.

If there is a $50 difference they may eat it but if it's hundreds it is unfair to expect them to take that hit. You can have tires miles from DT direct to your local DT. You will be charged to mount and balance if you did not buy them mounted and balanced from DT direct.

I have bought 24 wheels and 19 tires through them in the last 2 years so I know their policies well lol.

At the time of purchase, you can buy Replacement Certificates from Discount Tire. If you puncture a tire or something that makes it unrepairable, they will replace them. See conditions below pulled from the link below. And I can't recall the exact price, but I think they were $30/per tire (I may be off on that). To me, for an extra $150 (or less), its completely worth it, especially when offroading. $150 piece of mind is better than ~$300 for each new tire.

If a tire covered by the Certificate for Refund, Repair or Replacement fails due to a defect or an unrepairable road hazard, and still has legal tread (3/32") remaining across the tire, and it has been in use less than 3 years from date of purchase, Discount Tire will give a refund of the full purchase price, together with the applicable sales tax and give you the option to purchase the same new or comparable tire at the refund price, with the payment of any applicable sales tax. There is no prorating, no disqualification for any reason such as run-on damage and no mileage adjustment. It is the very best tire certificate program we know of.

Pretty sure you are going to get charged tax when ordering online because you have DT local to you. So no savings there.

I just ruint a tire I got from DTD, Took it to my local DT to see if it could be repaired, they said no, but with my certificate they offered to get me a new one in, balance and install it. My original certificates were $40 per tire but DTD gave me one free one, so $160 for five certs. My local DT wanted $60 and then $70 for a replacement cert but I told them I didn't want it so I was out the door for free. They did tell me they would match any DTD pricing. they even checked torque on all my tires. I got my tires mounted at another shop originally and cost me $75 or $15 per tire. So yes, they will price match, and my local shop will also try to upsell but gave me no grief when I declined.

My order experience at DTD and customer service at DT were lacking and quite sub-par. I won't be returning for any future business. Would rather go to my local tire shop. They carry the same products, competitively priced, and much better service.

This is typically true....however with DTD they don't. I have a Discount Tire 1 mile from my house but if I order from Discount Tire Direct, they still don't charge sales tax. Maybe it's the DTD and DT name that's the difference?

If I order from Northridge 4X4, I get charged tax because they have a warehouse here, sucks!

Discount tire did me right on a set of Pirellis I picked up for my Durango, Original quote for 4 installed and full warranty was somewhere around $1200. Told him I wasn't looking to spend more than $1k for 4.(had priced them out prior to going in at other vendors too) Got out for less than a grand, with full replacement warranty, when I was expecting just the tires for that. Salesman was a jeep guy too. Had a slick JKU in the parking lot.

I can't complain about how they have treated me on several sets of tires.

Agreed, I have a local tire shop that's excellent and I typically try to use his shop if it makes sense. They knows how to properly balance a tire, how to set up an alignment for performance driving, etc. Only problem is it took me literally years to find him. The great majority of "local" tire stores I have been to are almost never competitively priced (unless you shop the specials), knowledge and service can be spotty, and many times they push what they carry instead of what I want. They cater to people that don't know anything about tires, the typical customer walks in and just asks for tires, whatever they recommend. Very easy to take advantage of that. I can't just take their word for it, I have to do a ton of research on tests, reviews, pricing, installation add-ons, etc.

With online tire shopping, you get the best of both worlds... find the tire you want, the best price, pick the installer you like and most of them have pre-arranged installation costs. Discount Tire Direct, Tire Rack, and Tire Buyer all have a similar service and similar pricing, I have used all 3 over the years and they are all pretty good. And my favorite local tire guy is a recommended installer for all 3 so it works out perfectly.
