Don't hate the three point eight!

Not even a week old, and less than 1000 miles... and im finding this motor to be so not what I expected from the heaps of negative vibes. I can go down the freeway, accelerate locally, snap. Through the gears while screwing around in my yard...

...and as of this, my second fillup- 20.5 miles per gallon average.

Not bad, not bad at all!

I love my Jeep.

Real Jeeps have 64hp, leaf springs, and the driver farts on the gas tank. Sorry, you are driving a phony.

(just kidding)

Yeah, don't let the hype and anticipation of the new motor make you think you've got a gerbil under the hood of your Wrangler. Plus, there are plenty of fresh air and ECU flash updates that can make it even better.

Enjoy

no hate here... I have several buddies with the III.VIII (3.8V) running 35's and 37's with no problems... and they can do some crazy things climbing things.

I meant this as a tongue in cheek jibe- because I really kept hearing loads of bad things about them... ...and it's turning out to be not so bad at all. In fact, I'm pleasantly surprised in just about every way.

I never understood the 3.8 hate myself. Maybe it is because I don't have a 3.21 geared JKU. I have always had plenty of power even before I did any mods. I just did a 420 mile trip towing a 2000lb trailer behind my Jeep up Virginia hwy 81 to I-77 into West Virginia to hwy 19 to I-79 into PA. And hwy 19 was not that fun. Yet I passed 18 wheelers that had to go into the steep grade slow lane with ease and if I wanted to could even keep it at 60mph on most of those grades and even 70mph on smaller grades. On the steep grades it liked 50 to 55 mph better but could go faster if I wanted and that was towing 2000 lbs behind me.

What else do people want?

People here in Denver like to drive 80mph up I-70 (5000 elevation gain), passing those going 75. The previous JK (<2012) and my TJ wont do it easily. But I don't complain. It's a jeep not a race car.

That's the thing- I'm getting the mileage by not breaking 70 mph... usually chillin' at about 67 in a 65 on I-71.

I get passed a bit more than I do on my motorcycles- but I'm either enjoying the sun on my face on the way home from work- or I'm sipping some coffee and listening to the radio, peering out at a world less happy than mine through that big ol' windshield.

I've owned a lot of fast bikes, and some that are still pretty darn quick- and now, I realize that in a world where 5 to ten miles over the speed limit is my regular max, there are a whole host of two and four wheeled vehicle options.

I should mention I have the 3.73 gears, six speeds, and 16" stock wheels (yeah, boo hiss- I'm scoping some takeoffs)- and frankly, it's a great li'l setup. I can't wait to see how it performs broken in.

Not a good picture but all I have right now of the 7X12 trailer I towed. It is the black trailer behind my Jeep. Still a couple feet of the back not in the picture

We had a going away party for a colleague tonight (he's moving to a different division).

On the way home, I've got the tunes playing, Sunrider open... and I'm cruising at 70. Some semi-trucks play grab-a**, so I hit the gas in 6th and I'm doing an indicated 82 to pass them in no time.

What's the prob with this engine, again? WTF, over?

Maybe my mistake is not running swampers on a four door hard top with a 4 speed auto... but this 2dr 6spd is plenty good boom boom.

I have 650 miles on my new 2011 JK Sport base, with auto trans and 16" wheels.
I'm already averaging 19 mpg and find it cruises easily at 70 mph.
This is my 6th Wrangler and I'm very happy with it.

I agree, I have two jeeps. A 98 wrangle with 126,000 miles on it. It is just a 4 cylinder and I always thought that had enough pep to get around town. I just bought my 2nd jeep. 2011 jk. The 3.8 feels like I'm in a race car!

My little Honda civic has 200HP so going to a huge vehicle like a wrangler unlimited with the same amount of HP has me a little antsy for getting an '11 over a '12. Even with the SUBSTANTIAL savings over buying a '12.

I've never driven an Unlimited, so I don't know; but, as big as they are, I can see where more horsepower would be a plus.
i've owned Corvettes and even a Lotus, so I have experience in fast vehicles and my 2011 JK suits me fine for what it is supposed to be; specifically, a true off-road capable vehicle.

How much does the JKU weigh over the JK? I really have no idea. They may be closer than I think.

Oh and with the Sahara and the 18" stock wheels what does that do to power and fuel mileage? I have no clue about these things.

200HP in a Civic? BS. If it is then you put a different engine in it.

No complaints about the 3.7 in my 08 KK.

Well, the new civic SI does have 201 hp, but I'm fairly certain anything before that maxed out around 170 hp stock....Either way, I'd rather have a jeep with a lawn mower engine than a civic.

You're right the SI does have 200 hp, the regular one has 140.

It was never "just" the 3.8.

It was the 3.8 combined with 3.73 gears AND the 4 speed auto.
or
It was the 3.8 combined with 3.21 gears even with a 6 speed stick.

It wasn't the engine....it was the engine combined with a poor tranny and gearing that was too tall. Throw on larger wheels, bumpers and a winch...and you can see where the complaints come from. Especially on the heavier JKU's.

If I wanted a stick...(which I don't)...I think a stock 2011 Rubi with 4.10's and a 6 speed stick would be more than fine as a daily driver.

I recently got the software upgrade, RRT-11-070, and ever since she's been alot peppier and slightly improved gas mileage. Shifts much better.

Yes I'm aware since I do drive an SI which is what has me worried about buying the '11 auto JKU being such a huge vehicle with only 200hp. I can get a pretty loaded '11 sahara in the exact color that i want for $30k OTD or a fairly well optioned '12 jku sport for $31k out the door. Sigh. Maybe I'll wait until EOY and see what incentives are available. I just know if I buy the '11 that I won't be happy with it.

It's a whole different animal. If you don't like the 11, chances are you won't like the 12 either. It's not going to run and corner like a little ricer.

3.73 with manual works too.

Daggo I think you're just way off the page from what I'm saying and not really sure what your deal is. You seem to be spouting the first things out of your head without really knowing anything about what you're talking about. If you aren't being helpful then just stay quiet please thanks. My concern for the rest of you folks here (minus Daggo) is that 200HP for such a huge vehicle might be a problem with the auto in passing situations or highway driving. I do not want and do not intend to race the jeep or "drive it like a ricer". I've never even driven a modern jeep so I come at this from a total beginner's standpoint. It may not even be an issue for standard everyday type driving. I'm going to see if I can rustle the girlfriend up to go test drive an '11 and a '12 with me tomorrow if I can get her motivated. I have my mind set on a Sahara but I just can't really afford the '12 sahara without selling my civic which I don't really want to do.
