Got rear ended

Driving down 287 in north nj and a kid in a 2009 wrangler went to change lanes, he was too focused on the lane he was merging into, not focused on the lane he was in. His passenger tire (front bumper was chopped) met with my rear bumper on the driver side of my 2013. My bumper was dented, license plate bracket crushed, and the metal was pushed in a bit. He however lost a fender and blew his tire.

After a slew of profanities, we both pulled off the highway, collected debris before the stopped cars left, and got to introductions. He was about 18, immediately apologetic, and took full responsibility, so i couldnt even be mad at the kid. We changed his wheel, and waited TWO HOURS for the state trooper to arrive. I got to know the kid, exchanged fun stories. Once the cop arrived we took care of everything and i was able to leave, gladly both of us uninjured.

if its a small fender bender like that I try to work it out with the other person and avoid getting the police or insurance company involved. You have a new Jeep and this will show up on your carfax and depreciate the value of the Jeep much more than the cost of the bumper if you ever decide to to sell it later on, even if its not your fault. I understand that this was a young kid and I don't know the full extent of the damage but it seems like $500 would have covered everything and if he didn't have it maybe his parents would have helped. Believe me, the last thing they want is for this to be filed with their insurance company, especially if the kid is under their policy.

Glad to hear you are both uninjured. I drive 287 everyday , this road is a real mess during rush hour.

A shop dtold me its about 4k, if it was only the bumper and license bracket i woulda let him go, but there was body damage, it hurt my heart since ive been in his position but this was just really unfortunate

You did the correct thing, always call the Police in any accident , it will save you most times, don't worry about the CarFax thing keep the paperwork with the vehicle so if it can be shown exactly what was done to your wrangler.

$4k??? That's BS man. Your Jeep doesn't look like it has FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS worth of damage.

I drive 287 though NJ and 95 in CT most weeks for work. Hate those roads.

Accidents are never any fun but what makes it better is when both parties are level headed.

I got rear ended on the interstate, rear bumper, 1 shock, muffler, front bumper (shoved me into the suv in front of me) insurance check...723.00
the toyota that hit me was totalled. I drove on to work.

I once witnessed an accident while sitting in my vehicle at a stop sign about 50 feet away. One of the cars involved skidded towards me and ultimately tagged my front bumper, although it was probably only going 6-7 mph. The plastic on my bumper was slightly scuffed. Her insurance paid me $850!

Aw crud. Well, since you need a new rear bumper, might as well go with after market. Then the factory front won't match the rear so you will "have" to replace that one too. Bummer, the front bumper you selected has a spot for a winch and lights. It looks silly without them so need to buy those. The rear bumper you selected has a swing out tire carrier that looks silly with a smaller tire on it. You will have to buy 35" tires which also means new wheels and a lift.

Oof, suddenly this fender bender is getting expensive...

Shops usually estimate a bit high to be sure, but the tub and tailgate look to have some damage - that's body work and he needs to be sure to get it on a frame bed and have it checked by lazer.

The insurance guy looked at my green TJ and we wrote everything up together, he thought for sure it was savable. I told him I didn't care either way, I first need it to have the frame checked. He wrote that up as the first thing, and it came back tweaked. That tweak totaled the TJ. I ended up buying it back from the insurance and then selling it to be built into a crawler since the guy wanted it knowing it was tweaked.

If they fix the metal tub right, paint to blend, fix the tailgate, etc it can add up quick. Unfortunate for the kid here, I would have let him go myself if it was just the bumper and plate mount.

Now, if they find it's only tub damage and nothing more in structure - I wouldn't fix it in a shop. I'd bang it out until it's about right again, give it some paint to protect it again, and then get some steel tub corners to cover it up. You'd have better protection in the end, and it will probably be less to do that, and paint those corner covers to match, then fix it at that shop.

dude... Same thing happened to me a month ago. 18 year old kid in a wrangler wasn't paying attention and rear ended me on the freeway. The kid apologized and took full responsibility. State Troopers took 2 hours to respond (would have been there in 8 seconds if I went a little further down the road going 11 over). I still don't have my Jeep back though since Farmers insurance seems to he having a hard time comprehending why they should have to replace my previously perfect tailgate that their insured taco'd.

I was doing about 15 n he was maybe at 25 mph, so it wasnt too much of an impact. If he didnt have his front bumper chopped this might have been different

Yep, a full size bumper would mean you'd both have some scuffs on the rubber and nothing else. IMHO, stubby bumpers are dangerous and should be left to off-road only vehicles. Just imagine the difference between a full size bumper and a stubby if you hit a pedestrian.

I don't think a full size bumper would have made that much difference. It sheared the edge off his stubby endcap and torn into the flare pretty good too. If it had stopped damage at the front of the flare with a few scratches on the flare, then maybe it would compare to a full sized bumper.

If you think stubby bumpers are dangerous, then a full metal bumper, full or stubby sized would be dangerous to you as well. There is no plastic and rubber to give and take during impact.

I've seen two Jeeps 'kiss' and both had stubby metal bumpers, neither had damage though due to the speed and angle of the bump. I will say the damage here would have been a lot worse to the rear tub if the Jeep hitting him had a metal aftermarket bumper of any kind.
