Half Door Configurations - More reasons I love 1/2 doors

So today was one of those days where it was sunny parts of the day, rainy others. I didn't want to mess with putting the top up and down all day, so I ran with the Sunrider open, and upper halfs off. Which got me thinking, how many configurations are there, and how many have I done without thinking about it.

I counted 39, and 23 that I had "accomplished". Pretty cool. I probably missed some or messed some up. But here it is.

I know pics or it didn't happen. If I had been thinking, I would have taken a pic of each of the 23 I tried.

If you add windshield up and down, and tailgate open and closed to that....

Considering Half doors

I'm considering half doors, I see that you're back East, is your Jeep a DD? I live in Reno and ski a lot so I'm concerned about snow issues. From following the forum, I'm guessing that ordering half doors is extra rare. I really like the look and HD's would save a little $. I'm planning on building a bad ass rig so I'm thinking $10K in mods. It would still cost less than a stock jku rubi

I have been wishing lately that we got half doors on ours. My wife said hell no when we ordered, but it would be nice to be able to store them in the back of the Jeep when they're off so we can put them back on when the weather gets bad.

It is a DD. And it's my second half door Jeep. I had a TJ that I used as a DD in Chicago, NJ and MA. Never had a problem with the snow and the half doors. And these new half doors are worlds better than the old ones. Very solid. I don't think you'll be disappointed. The heater kicks butt, so cold is not an issue. It barely flaps any more. The noise level is acceptable even at highway seeds. And it's SO MUCH BETTER with the top down and upper halfs off than just with windows down.

However, one correction. It's not cheaper. With the JK, JEEP made full doors standard and half doors a $0 option. That has driven a lot of the full door sales as well, but it's what people want. Technically, you're paying for full and getting half, but I wouldn't change them. You'll need to custom order. They are hard to find.

The problem is that very few dealers stock half doors at all. So, consumers can't even find one to test drive and check out. If they had just one or two on the lot, I bet more people would buy them once they tried them. But the way it is now, you have to take a leap of faith or have already owned a half door Jeep and now what to expect. They have exceeded my expectations, and I can still fit them in the back of my 2 door despite the lack of storage space and their bigger size.

No kidding. What about if you've got the dual top group? Of half doors and full doors? Oh the humanity!

Very true. One issue is that my wife wanted power windows and locks, which aren't available with half doors for good reason. I'm thinking I may start saving for some to use during the summer.

I almost did that. Was going to go Dual Tops and full doors from factory and add the half doors through Mopar after. But I took that money and put it into a lift, tires and soon to be added bumpers. I didn't want to deal with storing all that stuff, taking stuff on and off. I know I would just run soft top and half doors most of the time.

That will look great. The Black top and windows with the orange color should make a really nice combo.

ndrugby, thanks for posting the pics of your half doors. I just ordered a '12 Rubicon 2-door with half doors (the only way to go!) and I had been looking for some pics of current half door setups. I also ordered the AHT tow package and deep tint sunscreen windows. How do you like those options? And do you already have a lift on that '12 Rubi? Got any more pics?

Nice!!! And I agree, it's the only way to go. I like the tint. I think it looks good and is functional. The AHT I haven't used yet. I also got the Connectivity group but didn't upgrade to the 730N. I didn't want to spend that kind of cash on it, at $1000 I probably would have done it. It's incomplete without a rear camera and lockpick so you end up above $2000. The Mic works great for phone calls with the top down on the highway, I was impressed callers could hear me.

Lift: 3.5" AEV
Tires: Duratrac 315/70R17
Wheels: Stock - painted

Pics - last one is stock. The one has a pool noodle cut in half on bottom of door. I did that when taking the door off to protect the door when it's in my garage. I also put them in Bestop Full Door Storage Bags:

Man, the more I see pictures of your rig, the more I wish I would have ordered the half doors on my soon to arrive 2012 JKU. I really liked them on my TJ and it sounds like they are much improved for the JK. Maybe I'll get a set from the dealer for the summer.

You can order them and include them in your financing if you need too. My dealer offered to give me their wholesale price on them if I wanted full doors and ordered half doors through their parts department (it was 20% off MSRP). Maybe you can get the same deal if you want them. Good Luck

I am a half door whore. Once you go half you never go calf. Wait, I think that is veal. I went out with a jeep door last night. I got half way then the top came off. I unzipped last night at starbucks! I must unzip when asking for grey poupon from the limo next to me. The officer asked, can you roll down your window? MY answer was NO! HE ain't heavy, he's my half door. Half doors are great pull off the uppers and you are half way to doorless. I cannot see having all that metal enclosure that full doors have. Roll down the windows and you are still enclosed in a metal frame. Sorry talking half doors with me is like talking to a born again. Cannot see your full door point of view unless you have a hardtop and want that security of a CAR. Read my lips .I will not raise taxes but will only have a half door. Half doors YES! Half a brain? A high probability. There was a man from Baldor, who's jeep had a half door, he would unzip on a drive and felt alive when he got blown by the wind.

After a couple of months with Bestop soft doors which I like around town but can't seen spending a lot of highway time with, I am considering finding some cash for these half doors. Also, the Bestop doors do let quite a bit of water in when parked in the rain. I should have listened to you when I ordered.

Anyway, how much do these weigh? Easy to get on and off or a pain? The full ones are heavy enough its a pain to line them up with the hinges so they are only going on for winter and road trips.

Rugged Ridge now makes half-doors for JK that are modeled after the factory ones.

After reading threads like this for months, I have come to the conclusion that a lot of people would have bought half-doors if they had know about them when ordering or if they were available on the dealer lot. Remember, most jeepers never get on the forums (and know about things like this) and often take whatever is available when they visit the dealer.

I just hope that Jeep keeps the half-doors on the next redesign of the Wrangler. If enough of us order them now, that is bound to happen.

They are light. No electronics in them, and the uppers are super light. Taking them on and off is super simple, plus if you just work with the half, you can get a real good grip on them.

Yup. I mentioned a smilar thing above. The problem isn't that people don't want them, it's that they don't know that they do want them. And that's because none are available to test drive and check out.

Jeep mentioned for the 12 that half doors would remain because they are a key part of what a Jeep is. I hope they keep that attitude.

People worry about the unzipping. While it's not as easy as power windows, it is easier than manual roll down windows. And the benefits far outweigh having to unzip.

IMHO, this is how Jeeps are supposed to look!! Doorless or at the very least half doors. When I buy a JK this will be a requirement.

Too bad half doors seem to restrict some options, so if you really wanted those options you have to buy full AND half, wasting more money, or buying half and doing without. Or buy half and aftermarket all your goodies. Meh.... But it looks sharp though. Love the way it looks on my Thing. And I checked, its doors don't fit the Jeep. Almost....
