hard top question :)

Hi! I just bought a 2013 jeep wrangler sport (finally got car I always wanted) but I could not afford the hard top so I was looking on CL and Ebay for used ones. I believe the sport is the JK model but are there any other years that the top can be usable or can I only search 2013 hard tops?

my concern is just for the winter when it comes because it has been rough past few years and I don't want the soft top to get TOO weathered and I figured the hard top is better insulation during those cold months. in north, nj and would appreciate any help or if anyone knows anyone trying to unload one

I like switching over in the winter. The soft top will last a lifetime.
Keep a eye on in the classifieds. I see them all the time.
I'm pretty sure all tops will fit. I could be wrong though.

as a factory option its 900 dollars, after market its 2500 dollars. I don't think you will find it for sale used for less than the factory option price. Maybe a few dollars off if you're lucky.

For what it's worth, the hard top isn't a necessity in the winter at all. Plenty of folks run soft tops year round even in much colder areas than NJ. I can tell you from chilly experience that the hard top is not insulated at all- it's basically just a bare fiberglass-like material. The heater in your JK will keep you toasty regardless of your top.

I also really wouldn't worry about the soft top getting too weathered from the winter. They make them pretty rugged these days.

Same, the JK that I wanted only had a soft top. I really wanted a hard top for next winter, just because you can remove the ice on the windows, has a defroast and wiper. I was able to find a used 2013 one from an owner that wanted pretty bad a premium soft top for summer but didn't have enough money. Got it at the factory price.

So I now have both and will install it this automn.

You can use any year hardtop to enclose your Jeep. The previous years (2007-2010) the windows were smaller, but the hard top dimensions are all the same. Now as far as the electronics, I'm not sure, but since you have a soft top you probably don't have the harness for a hard top. If you want to have working rear defrost, wipers and washer, you will have to add the harness, and then have the dealer reprogram your computer to accept the hard top electronics. If you just want to have the enclosure for the 6 months or so, I wouldn't worry about it.

For what it's worth, I ran the soft top only in my last JK for two years all year and had the hard top sitting on a cart. Previously, I had a YJ that I ran soft top only for decades. I usually changed them out every 4 years or so and that was only because I found a new bestop one on sale.

Running a hard to will increase the lifespan of the soft. I never said you can't run the soft over the winter months.
3-4 years seams average.

Mine is a 07 and in perfect shape,

any 2007 and up top will fit.
Your jeep is probably not wired nor does it have the plumbing for rear wiper / washer. That you'd have to get throught the dealer.

UNfortunately like some have said you simply aren't gonna find a hard top for cheaper then it would have been to get it ON your jeep to begin with..usually best to go the other way around..get the Jeep with the Hard-top then look for a soft top....

Never the less..... try this link

It is so much easier to get the hardtop first. But since you already purchased the Wrangler (btw, never call it a car!), check CG or the forum classifieds.

Soft top is much more fun, hard top is easier to live with.

Jeeps are already unsecure vehicles. Soft tops unzip from the outside, so anyone can get into your vehicle at anytime without ever needing to open up the door. I never recommend running just a soft top without knowing more about your particular situation. Do you park in a garage at night? Driveway? Street? Apartment parking lot or carport? Do you park in a parking lot or parking garage at work? Or do you park at a train station and commute? Do you need to get in and out of tailgate a lot (window bar)? Are you near a high crime area?

Check NYC craigslist. I saw one on a few days ago for 1300 in great shape.

Security is an issue as well as access to rear of vehichle with soft top. I keep rear seat removed to haul bike, etc. and need access. Anyway, just my .002. either way, enjoy the ride.
