Question Heavy grinding noise when braking

Under moderate to heavy braking, even at slow speeds (especially when off-road) I get a grinding sound coming from the brake pedal area. It sounds like a stone grinder and the pedal vibrates too. It causes a loss in braking power.

Anyone?

Sounds like you need new brakes and maybe some rotors and/or drums.

Well the pads are fine, and when I took it into the dealer, they couldn't replicate the problem (big surprise) and couldn't find what was wrong.

That sounds like the ABS pump running. Try pulling the ABS fuse and driving it to see if the noise goes away. If it does, you know what is making the noise. Then the question is why has it just started doing it and why doesn't it happen to anyone else.

I agree with Mr Well! I think it is just the OP's first time hearing the ABS pump noise. All 3 of my Avalanches had loud ABS pumps, While I would not classify it as a grinding noise, I guess I could see how someone would. It would also explain why the dealer couldn't duplicate! The tech heard the noise, but recognized it as the normal ABS noise.

I think oilwell nailed it, although there is a slight possibility it could be a warped rotor. Did they actually pull the rotors to check them?

Just as a sidenote: I've had wheel bearings in the front of a RWD drive van let go and make some wild grinding noise too when stopping. Upon pulling the rotor off the bearings came out in a busted metal/powder form.

I don't think 4L deactivates the ABS, just the ESC/Traction Control.
