How much do we spend?

Was looking at how much Iíve spent so far modifying my 2016 JKU since purchasing last Oct. Iíll have spent approximately 8 grand when gears and lift are completed in a few weeks. Major items are new sound system, new larger tires, new wheels, new gears, 2.5 lift. There are other less expensive items but it sure adds up. To be honest I hadnít planned on doing all these mods and honestly none were necessary. I however decided to set up my jeep and plunged ahead with my spending spree.

After itís regeared and lift installed I will significantly slow down with my spending on jeep mods! I know theyíll always be something I want to do/add to it but itís really time for me to just enjoy the jeep.

Iím curious if other owners track what they spend on modding their jeeps? Is ignorance bliss as opposed to knowing exactly what you are spending? Are most happy and/or satisfied with what youíve accomplished and spent on your Jeep? Do you regret doing all or some of the mods? Are you planning for more expensive mods in the months ahead?

My guess this jeep thing is close to an obsession for many (include myself)! Many jeepers can instantly justify almost any expense in the pursuit of getting their jeeps how they want them.

I now believe itís an endless journey as long as you own one!

Iím in for about 11k. Never planned to spend any of it. Always said the Jeep is high enough stock, the tires are big enough....but now Iím lifted, regeared locked, and I just bought stuff to add a rubicon sway bar ran by my air compressor. WTF why? I donít know but I love it, itís fun and surprisingly my wife doesnít complain.

The question isn't "how much did I spend?"
It's "how much does my wife think I spent?"

Alternate realities....

I have never sat down and done the math to add up exactly how much I have spent. I don't even like doing the general math on the subject. I have spent a lot, and there is still more to spend. But I enjoy it. And as long as you can afford it and you enjoy it, what's not to like?

Some hit a point where they are "done". Honestly, I doubt I will ever hit that point. Modding it is part of the fun for me.

Heck, I was at $8K with just the replacement front axle and the roll cage that I did at the same time (after a flop).

Lift, tires, wheels (2 sets), tops, bumpers, lights, gears, locker, yada, yada, yada.

Probably another $8K, easy. Fortunately, a lot of it has been a little bit here, little bit there.

I also have about 9k invested and this is only because I did everything myself except the truss and gussets. The difference being just about every expensive item was necessary. I was taking a beating off road until I lifted it.

That right there sums it up

I had a perfectly good 2014 Sarahara JKU that I bought new and put 44k miles on it. I started al looking at all the mods I wanted to do, lift, gears, tires, wheels, & bumpers. I decided it made more since to trade it in on a Hard Rock. I still did the lift, tires, rims, tire carrier, lights ect. I just ran some quick numbers . Ive thrown over 8 grand at it. Now I am thinking it needs a winch.

One thing I think I'm starting to finally learn through this is to do it right the first time. When I ordered the 14 there was a 10A sitting on the showroom floor. And when I got the Hard Rock, I mistakenly went with a leveling kit and spacers for 33's. After a year, I went to 35's with a Mopar 2" lift.

Well I started putting a list together a few years ago and stopped because I did not want the wife to see it. If I include everything I have bought because of the Jeep I am approaching $30K. Before I will consider it complete I will be spending another $30K.

Right there with you, except for the part about it being complete.

As I mentioned, as long as it is what you can afford, and you are having fun, have at it.
I'm having fun.

I don't mind spending the money but now that I am on a fixed income it is a bit harder to come by. This will also be my last Jeep baring it being stolen or something. Most of the additional cost will be the engine swap.

Complete? What is this concept of complete?

Somehow, I think a complete Jeep is a unicorn.

Almost one year ago today I bought my 10A JKU. It was a bone stock grocery-getter in its previous life.

I'm anal-retentive to a fault and have a worksheet with all costs tracked, as well as any $$ earned by selling or re-selling parts over the past year. I have one of these for each of my past three jeeps too.

I just looked and I'm in for 7k!

Most of this is parts since I did all the work myself with the exception of the gears and axle sleeves/gussets for the front.

These files are all on a networked 1TB drive, but my wife does not store much on there and works mostly on her laptop. I don't hide anything, I just don't say "hey, look at these new parts I put on the Jeep".

Well complete at least has far as my initial concept goes. And I forgot about the Patriot Trailer I hope to buy so there is still $80K to go.

That is how mine goes. The "target" keeps moving further down the road, getting more and more expensive.
But that is OK, because "completing" the build isn't the point of the build for me.

Lets see. Since I got my 2016 hard top Sport new, I've upgraded/added:

- Front bumper & winch
- Wheels & tires
- Soft top & fabric half doors..

About $4500 so far.

To do... Lift, regearing and adding Truetracs front and rear.

I think I better live to 100, go back to work or win the lottery. I have a lot of other projects I would like to work on. A 40-50's power wagon, maybe a 2.5 ton military truck, a lead sled.

Got a Jeep that already had most things I wanted (lift, tires, good suspension upgrades, premium soft top, lots of lights (spod)). Needed to put a good tire carrier on, prep for Beach life (lots of rust prevention work including a Linex interior). $3000 for all that work.

Toss another $650 for new Ball Joints unexpected
Going to regear this fall for $1800 or so
New tires this fall adds another $1000.

So... bought a Jeep already "done" in many areas. Will have $6450 into it to have it all buttoned up. (This go round)......

I haven’t kept track because that would take the fun out of it. Guesstimating, I’d say I’m in it for about $15k, maybe $20k. That includes a lift kit, PR44 with all the goodies, hydraulic assist steering, bumpers and tire carrier, winch, twin compressor, armor, sport cage, lights, beadlocks and 37s, drive shafts, Rubicrawler, etc. Some people gamble, some people buy expensive watches, Some people sip expensive wine or whiskey, some have mistresses, I buy Jeep parts. I enjoy learning as I go and doing all the work myself, including regearing the axles. I’ve pretty much exhausted all the $2-3k or less upgrades at this point. My remaining wish list items are all quite a bit more expensive: 60s and 40s, long arms with coil overs, V8 conversion. Each a $10-20k project. not something I can slip by the wife and not things I can justify with two kids heading to college soon. These items will have to wait. Maybe forever.

I made a joke in a different thread about wanting to buy an airplane, but not having the ability after I get done with this Jeep. I wasn't joking about the plane, and the more I look at mods I'd like to do and what they cost, I could for real buy the plane I want for what I'll be into this thing for. Pulling up hard now. This whole mod thing gets ahold of you...Ö.Is there a 12 step program here on the forum?

Great way to look at it!

My wife gives zero sh*ts what I spend for the most part so we just don't talk about it. I bought it for $31K lifted with wheels, tires, bumpers, lights and winch. Turns out the lift, wheels, tires, bumpers and lights sucked so I dumped about another $5K net into it (after selling wheels, tires, bumpers, lights....winch was GTG LOL).

It really is a lot like the gun game. I guess if you look at it that way I am +/- two rifles into Jeep upgrades at this point....(no optics LOL)
