Question Is fabric protection necessary on the newer cloth seats?

When I picked up my new Sahara (with the cloth seats), the dealer pointed out that they are washable and extremely durable. I asked if I needed to scotchgard them, but the dealer said it wasn't necessary.

This surprised me as I expected some up sale pressure to purchase fabric guard or something, but all they promoted was stuff for the paint and undercoating.

So, if I've got the top on 95% of the time, and I'm not coating the seats in mud, limiting food/drink and don't own kids/pets... is it absolutely necessary to scotchgard them?

I mean, scotchgard isn't expensive - but is it overkill? I've also heard a lot of good things about the 303 fabric spray - but really - are the fabric seats as good as the dealer indicated?

My thoughts are - eventually the fabric is going to fail or fade or have a seam unstitch - would fabric protection help with any of this? or is it more for spills and stains?

Seat covers are also undesirable, especially as I wanted a Sahara for the nice seats / writing stitched into them (why pay extra to cover it up).
