JKU-R Hard Rock bumper questions.

Howdy folks. I don't get on here much, only on night shift when the system is all quiet and no storms or outages occur. Otherwise life is just too busy.

I retired from the Army in 1995, settled across the mountains from Fort Bliss. From then until now I have been crashing around the desert in a 1976 DJ-5D. Had lots of parts and ideas, but never seemed to have the time to work on improving it. Wife got upset with the axles on the patio and the unfinished 4.0 in front of the washer. So she made me give the DJ to our daughter, the 4.0 to our son, and she got me a 2015 JKU-R Hard Rock, in Copper Brown - for my birthday. We did our homework and got a super deal. Went to the local dealer with the best internet deal we could find, flashed a handful of cash, then started to walk out when negotiations stalled. I didn't mind sticking the dealer, but I gave the salesman a $50 gift card to a restaurant. <grin>. Basically we paid a Sahara price.

I LOVE IT! Additions are the JK1001 Android computer replacing the stereo, a dual-band V/UHF ham radio (whole family is licensed), APRS tracker radio, transmission oil cooler, and Peterson LED headlights. Those headlights - WOW!

I am seeking information on the Hard Rock bumpers. I believe they are the "10A bumpers. My searching the various messages over the past few evenings has turned up some information, but not exactly what I want to know.

My question: What options for adding a rear tire carrier exist for the hard rock bumper?

Someone local said Poison Spider would work. I tried E-mailing Poison Spider. They said I needed to call them. A large portion of my hearing is still in the Persian gulf, I don't do phones well. I explained that, and never heard back from them.

Any information would be most helpful. I truly appreciate the wealth of information on this board, and the experience of its many members.

I get off and can sleep in 90 minutes, I'll be back tonight, and check for any replies then. Thanks much - be safe.
.

The 10a bumper is designed to use the AEV spare tire mount, but I believe at the cost of your rear passenger tow hook. You can also just use the teraflex tire carrier, which is what I did. both function well and should support at least a 37" tire if you even go that big.

What outdr said. The more I see that color, the more I like it, especially on the Hard Rock.

From that I have read, the AEV carrier will raise the tire higher in your rear line of site. If you are going to go with a larger tire, that is necessary, but if you are going to a 33" or 35" tire, the Terraflex hinge carrier will allow for the tire to be closer to the factory position. Also check out Youtube videos of each.

I saw someone mount this - Smittybilt XRC/SRC Gen2 Bolt-On Tire Carrier and keep their red tow hook. For the life of me I can't find where I saw it, it was a White Hard Rock.

I have the Maximus 3 carrier, it's very well made, I'd recommend it for sure. The AEV one is made specifically for the 10A/HR bumper but you lose a tow hook with it which I wasn't a fan of. Let me know if there are questions I can answer for you on it.

I take it that the jack mount (which I wouldn't want) is optional. The price is close to the Teraflex. They both look like quality units, but does one have an advantage over the other? Thanks!

The Teraflex tire mount is nice. It is very adjustable and will hold a 37" tire (maybe bigger?) I have a 35" tire hung on mine and it is sturdy and solid. No flexing of the door.

Yeah you can mount a bunch of different things on there. I have no immediate plans for it but it's there if I want it. I didn't do much research on the teraflex carrier but I know it's very well regarded on here, so I think you will be happy either way. One thing I did like about the Maximus is you can adjust the height the tire sits on it to give more clearance on the back window.

I have the Teraflex and love it. Here's a pic to compare to the Maximus. Both are well made. Like Johnny, I did not want to lose the tow hook either. Plus both Maximis and Teraflex center the tire whereas AEV is off center. Notice the sign in the pic.

Good morning. Just coasting now until the morning crew relieves us, then I start 4 days off. I will be connecting up a transmission oil cooler later today.

Let me try to answer the questions posed above first.

Thanks for the reply OUTDR. I have seen an AEV spare tire mount. I didn't really like it. Yes - the whole rear window was covered. I suppose it also had larger tires (it was on an AEV JEEP). And I guess I really don't want to remove a tow hook either.

Thanks for the reply Elwood. I really wanted a JKU in the metallic green of a few years ago. But my wife convinced me to buy NEW, and the green wasn't available... except for TANK. I was a soldier for many years, and I guess I just didn't want TANK! <grin>.

Thanks for the reply KCchiefs00. I will look up and consider the SmittyBuilt unit. If you do find the info you mentioned, please share.

Hi Sneaton. Thanks for the reply. I was shopping for used, and the first thing I learned was that the JEEPs hold their value. The wife nearly forced me to get a new one. I have a dealer less than a mile from me, I was willing to pay a premium for that. I went there first and got a bid. The JKU-R-HR listed got over $49k. His bid was $45.5k. Then I E-mailed that bid to every jeep dealer within 1000 miles except CA. Who really WANTS CA emissions? I waited a few days for E-mail replies, then sent the lowest out again, until I got the bid down to $41.5 k in Tucson and Phoenix. I took that to the local guy, and in the end we settled for $42k. I suppose there were better deals, but I was satisfied.

Thanks for the reply JohnnyP26. I will certainly check out the Maximus unit, and will check back if I have questions. I particularly like the extra mounting plate on it. I need a place to attach a large ham radio antenna, that is what is driving my search. How does it mount? Looks like it replaced the door hinges in the photo.

Good question JimmyW. I will watch to see if you get a reply.

Thanks for the reply SloW8. I will also check out the Terra-Flex unit.

Howdy 2014RubiX. I like the look of it. It too looks like it might replace the stock door hinges. Is this a fact, or does it mount another way?

Thanks all. Well, I better get back to work. Inly 3 more hours and the day-shift comes in...... and I get 4 days off. My birthday is Saturday, and the wife wants to go explore the Malpais volcanic area west of El Paso for my birthday. Gotta love it! Thanks Y-all.

Mike - El Paso.

Ok, I finally found the post with the XRC tire carrier mounted on a HR bumper and the red tow hook still in place. I was really looking for it because he had some leds flush mounted in his bumper and I had been thinking about doing it as well. Sounds like it took some effort to retain the hook, but worth it IMO.

I think the bottom line is that you have choices and they're all pretty capable so he may just come down to the Price and which style you like the look of best. Good luck with your selection let us know what you choose.

Well, it has been a tough summer. My wife raises and shows champion Great Danes. I had two, they were my best friends. One died of Liver Cancer, he was 6. Then 40 days later my other died. Cause unknown. She was only 3. And the vet bills trying to save her are enormous. There will be no jeep parts for several months now.

I would have replied earlier, but I have been living in a very dark place for a few weeks now, and just starting to come out of it. If it would bring them back, I would give up this new jeep in an instant.

There will not be much $$$$ for jeep parts until the dog emergency credit card is paid off.

Through the sadness, there is a chance of puppies at Thanksgiving. Perhaps one will find a way to fill the void in my heart.

The white one was River, 5 obedience titles, he was 5 when the photo was taken at the Tucson Dog show. The gray one was Gray-Cee. She had just earned her first obedience title and was settling into training, she was only 3.

I miss them. Thanks for the help all.
