lighting do-over

when I bought this Jeep it had two lights on bumper (labeled "H.I.D." only) that were too large in diameter and stuck up over the hood significantly, took them off. It also had a 52", probably Ebay special light bar over the windshield with possibly the worst switch ever (like an old school high beam foot switch). The novelty of switching on that brightness has worn off, and the thing just looks ugly and makes noise, so it is going away too.


So, just looking for some thoughts on what constitutes the "right amount" of additional lighting for a Jeep. I am replacing the rear bumper and will probably buy one with small lights for the rear, but trying to decide what to do up front.

Just a couple of KC style on the bumper hoop to go with factory and fogs? Small light bar on hoop?

The "right amount of light"? Have to ask, first of all how much night wheeling do you do? Do you go leading in a group? Or are going to be blinding the guy ahead of you? Are your trails straight and/or open land or windy wooded trails? You get the picture, how much will you really use them?

As most know the stock headlights need help. When the bumper was added it has 2 mounting holes for lights that have to be used. I won a 20" light bar and hated it. Light all over the place and the color temp was way too white. Replaced them with the KC spotlights - much better. Then I replaced the bumper with a stubby and it came with "fog" lights. Everyone was flashing me so I asked if they are DOT approved - they are not, So I can't use them on road. I finally ended up changing out the headlights with AnzoUSA headlights. They have a great pattern and I don't really need any other lights.

In all honesty, probably wheel at night and have the chance to use the off road lights 3-4 times a year. Even then, don't really need them, but it looks cool!

I went from rectangle cubes back to round lights.
A pair of PIAA LP550 LEDs on the bumper hoop and a pair of PIAA LP530 on the A- Pillar.
These lights complement the Factory Mopar LED headlights nicely.
PIAA has a Jeep kit for the LP530 that includes the A-Pillar brackets.

Not much true "wheeling" at night before I got the Jeep, but a lot of night trail riding. I can only see the amount increasing honestly. Not sure how much group night riding I will be doing, if any then surely a small group of 2 or 3 at most. Terrain and trails of all sorts, open desert with little to no vegetation and no road rules, slickrock, high alpine tight wooded trails.


What I mean by the right amount is enough to supplement the factory lights but not overkill/light up the whole damn mountainside. Useful not obnoxious. The 52" bar is currently 10% useful 90% obnoxious.

I love night wheeling. Rock crawling, exploring, dirt roads, whatever. You get what you pay for with lights. My light bar is so bright, I can't tell that my LED headlights are even on. Take the time to adjust everything and you can't go wrong.

We were recently in Moab camping on sand flats on fins and things and some lone wrangler came thru at night and I have never seen lights so bright. He lit up the area like day light. It looked like he had a dual row top mounted light bar but was hard to tell. He must have hit something tho as he was clanking pretty bad.

Lighting is hard to photograph consistently unless you use a decent camera with manual capability and use the exact same settings for all the photos.

On my JKU I run led headlights and foglights, which are pretty bright already. I then added some pilar pods that angle out at a 45-degree angle and rock lights. If I was going to wheel more night then I would add a 20" on the front.

My last ride was a WJ with a roof rack. I had one light on each corner of the roof rack and two on the front bumper. It was just amazing. Full light all-around.

Thank you, exactly the kind of input I was looking for.

I am thinking:

rears in bumper
pillar pods for sidelight
20" bar or two rounds on hoop
Maybe upgrade factory heads and fogs (no way I will do the JWS thing though...jeez!)

IMO no such things as to much light. When I travel I tend to avoid freeways and program dirt roads are okay. This as me on some very dark roads and it is rare to see a vehicle at all at night.

I have already upgraded the headlights to LED, big improvement unless it is snowing. Because I got rid of the stock bumpers I am running 20 degree spots instead of fogs. Currently they are pointed straight ahead but after a close run in with a Texas Long Horn they are going to be angled 35 degrees of center shortly. I also run a very cheap 15 inch light bar on the front, flood used primarily for camp setup in the dark. I also have 2 lights in the rear that are also floods.

Future plans call for 6.5 inch light cannons and replacing the light bar with a better spot/flood combo light bar. Oh and of course rock lights.
