Magnaflow Exhaust

I have heard many youtube clips on the magnaflow exhaust. I purchased one on Amazon back in February and installed it. At first I did not like the sound. It sounded like a Honda Civic with the Maxwell House coffee can on the back. I called Magnaflow and they said run for a few hundred miles and if you don't like it better they would take it back. Here we are 5 months later and I have really come to love the sound of the exhaust. It is smooth, no drone sound and the raspy sound did go away after about 3 weeks of driving it. It is not the best mod I have made to the Jeep, but it certainly gives it a satisfying sound and I am very glad I added it.

I've been debating this mod. I used to have a 2008 STi with the great boxer rumble. Then I drove a C63 AMG which has an intoxicating V8 exhaust note that is like nothing else on the road. I miss the sound, but keep telling myself "this is a Jeep" and it's a naturally aspirated V6 Pentastar, not a turbo boxer or 450hp V8. I think that I would be disappointed with the magna flow axle back but I keep wavering.

I just put on a Magnaflow 17143 this week. I wanted something small that would tuck up out of the way and was less worried about how it sounds.. It does sound a little "ricey", and there is a bit of a drone when cruising on the freeway at about 70MPH - but I've only put about 50 miles on it so far.. Hopefully it will mellow out a bit.

a couple reviews on amazon stated that the driver side pipe sticks out about an inch farther than passenger side pipe coming out the back. you guys experience this issue? i am also thinking of pulling the trigger on this mod, and love magnaflow stuff, but that pipe issue would bother me.

I would say more like a half inch. I am OCD and it really does not bother me. I almost removed the muffler a couple of times the first month I had it because it was very ricey. I wouldn't consider taking it off now. The sound is very mellow...almost newer BMW 330i sound..maybe even a little deeper. I am very happy with this mod.

I had one on my '10 JKU no (front resonator) and it sounded really great. I now have a '12 and it has a resonator. Have you removed that or is your happy sound with the forward resonator still there?

I kinda got used to quiet, but thinking maybe time for sound again?

I have not removed the resonator. I don't want it too loud or not until I make a weekend only toy. It will be soon.

My '07 JKU (my post said '10, mistake!) had no resonator anyway and and yup different V6 I know, but it was a perfect sound! Real 6 cylinder sound, not "ricey" at all. It also was not really loud unless you really poked it. I was hoping for the sound of my old straight six with headers or the "Jag" sound and it was really a lot like that. I was happy with it, when I got my '12 I got lazy and went long enough to get used to the quiet I guess (well as quiet as a JKU can be) and kinda liked that after 60K of "hot rod" noise. Now kinda missing it (maybe). My daughter has one on her '10 JKU and it sounds pretty good too, she says her friends sometimes call it her "lobster boat" however?? For some reason (same motor) hers is louder especially at idle (hence I guess the "lobster boat" syndrome!).

I've hear some youtube sound bites and really nothing like the sound I had or she has??? Maybe different mfg. process now or maybe just crappy speakers on my computer?

Drive safe and try not to break stuff off road!!

I would say it is more like half an inch also and you don't really notice it unless you are standing right over the bumper.

That would be the right one. Give it some time. You will like how it mellows out and the rice noise subsides.

Hahaha.

I went a similar route (actually have them still) as you.

04 STi (heavily modified) Love the boxer rumble
15 C63
JKUS.

The JKUS is definitely an anemic sounding vehicle. I too am debating something to make it sound a touch better.

Haha. Glad you have all three. I miss my STi the most but love the care-free nature of the Jeep. No more worrying about parking too close to other cars, no more worrying about driving up too close to a parking block, no more house shaking on cold start-up, little dings and scratches "add character", and my kids absolutely love the half-doors with top off!

Installed it today. nice and mellow like others have described. Installation was a snap with the exhaust hanger pliers and a little pb blast to loosen the muffler connection. Excellent fitment, quality and price. I'm happy with it.

Not quite understanding the desire for a cool sound with a so-so engine. Those should be reserved for the engines that deserve to be heard. Any 'normal' jeep with an owner trying to sound cool equates to a tank top body builder who continually forgets leg day. Jeeps are cool for the purpose for which they were built.

Nothing so-so about the Pentastar at all. 3.6 liters and 285 horsepower. What CJ, YJ or TJ has had more HP. This is 216 cubic inches and 285 horsepower. Show me an old school stock V-8 with a better horsepower to cubic inch ratio. Don't even get me started about efficiency.

I understand this is an opinion thing, but for cryin' out loud...it's a jeep. This reminds me of the rednecks that have a stacks coming out of the bed's of their trucks. Sport and muscle cars are the only deserving candidates for wicked notes.

I really liked this muffler for awhile but I have already damaged it on some rocks. Those tips are just begging to be crushed. I'm going to be replacing it sooner than I ever intended with a high tuck cat back exhaust to get more clearance back there.

Did it get a little deeper as you kept putting miles on it? I've listened to a few youtube vids and it sounds pretty darn good!!

Not sure i noticed it getting deeper. But the sound is more consistent with what you would expect a jeep to sound like. Not ricey at all. I used to have a subaru wrx sti so I know what im talking about. Subtle yet noticeable difference.

I think this sums it up perfectly... they look and sound cool, but if you do any moderate wheel'n... they really are not the best choice

Mine is crushed a little on both sides from dropping off ledges and hitting the underside of the Magnaflow tips on the ledge. But here's the neat thing: the tips are a double-wall design, with quite a big buffer between the two walls. So while the underside of the tips are both flat, the exhaust openings are unphased. Plus, you can't see the flatness unless you get down lower than the tips and look up at them; from behind at normal heights they look perfectly round.

Also, having duals allows you to hose out one side and it blows the water out the other side! Sometimes comes in handy.
