Mileage Question 2012 with 88k?

Hello I'm very new to this forum. (Like one week)

I may be buying my first Jeep JK this week.

It is a 2012, base, 2 door, 6 speed manual, factory like (very few mods).

My biggest concern is that it has 88,000 miles on,

The asking price is 17K which seems lightly high to me but we have yet to haggle.

I will have a trusted mechanic/body shop inspect it for me.

Any thoughts on the mileage?

That mileage is not that bad. If well taken care of and maintained it should not be a big deal. Have the mechanic check it over and do a compression test and you should have a good idea what you are getting.

my 2012 jku Sahara has 78123 miles on it and it is great. I take very good care of the jeep and change the fluids and wash it often. so the 88K miles shouldn't be an issue if the jeep was well taken care of. check the frame for rust, check the seats for undue were check all the oils, if you can take it to a shop before you buy it do so and have them put a magnet in all the fluids and check for any shavings., take it for a test drive and make sure you put it in 4 high and 4 low to make sure it works.

The biggest issue is the manual transmission. That particular transmission is hit or miss. Given the mileage o would say it is a good one. As long as everything checks out and it feels solid in the transmission all should be ok.

I purchased a 2008 Rubicon with 83,000 in 2013. I drove it a couple of years and did not have a single issue mechanical issue. I believe it all depends on how the previous owner completed maintenance.

Ask your local dealer to run the VIN to see if the left cylinder head has been replaced yet.

Thanks for all the help

Looked at the Jeep today. It drove very well.

It's from Carmax they say its not a flood car.

However there is surface rust on the frame
And the inside smell very musty.

The soft top has a very small hole in it on the right side

I'm thinking I would have to replace the seats, carpet, and soft top costing about $3000

Any thoughts
thanks

You can just remove the carpet, lay it in the sun to make sure its completely dried out. Dry them out and give them a vacuum and you should be good there. You probably won't need to replace. There's plenty of aftermarket options for softtops so you can find a cheaper option. You can get seat covers for about $100-$150. Depending on the softtop you choose the total number could be $700 to $1500. The frame, engine and transmission should be where you focus.

With there being a musty smell I'd check the seats for signs of stains, and pull back the carpet to check the underside and the sheet metal for signs that it was submerged. That's not a deal breaker, as Wranglers are well capable of getting water inside and not having ill effects, but it might give you a bargaining chip. It could be a previous owner was caught in a downpour with the top open or off, or they took it offroad and that small puddle was a bit less small than they though... I've had friends hit with both scenarios. One gutted his interior to do a full cleaning after the Jeep fell onto its side in a puddle. He sold it, and that Jeep has since been spotted daily driving down in South FL. It was a modded 2012 Arctic 2-door.

Hole in the soft top... in the main sunrider portion, or in the side/rear windows? A hole would indicate that particular component needs to be replaced. Not sure what soft tops go for.

CarMax will not come down on the price any at all. So don't even try the 3k in repairs.
As for them saying it was never flooded of course they won't tell you..

I am more betting that the Jeep leaks bad and that is where the moldy smell is coming from. If you really want this Jeep do a search of the Vin but don't put a lot of truck in the on line reports like Carfax they do not always show accidents or flooding. On their report. Also take it to a mechanic you know and trust and pay them to go over it very well and go on what they say. It shouldn't be more then $100 and money well spent.
Make CarMax do the repairs to your liking before you sign the paperwork. I have been there several times in fact that is where I bought my Jeep. They tend to be very good about fixing things that is found wrong surface rust isn't a big deal but lot of rust is. Surface rust can be cleaned up and spray painted

To be honest I would most likely be looking at a different Jeep unless this one is something special to you. they have a lot of other jeeps to look at.

Thanks for all the help

My next candidate is a JL with 2300 miles on it. However the price increases.

Yes 2300 miles only.

thanks,
Mike

With the JL, you would have the security of a warranty if any repairs were needed.
