Need new ball joints

I replaced my factory ball joints at 45,000 miles with a set of Alloy USA HD's. less then 4 years later and about 28,000 miles I apparently need a new set as it's failed inspection. How does this thing eat through ball joints so quickly? I understand that Alloy USA has a 5 year warranty and I've still to see if the shop that did the install will stand behind them. I don't offroad and I don't abuse my Jeep. I'm running 285/75/17 tires on Black Rino Wheels but I didn't think that that setup would cause the HD ball joints to fail in less then 4 years. What's your thoughts?

Also, aside from Dynatrac and Rare (both top of the line but huge hit on the wallet), what ball joints do you recommend?

Tire size is reasonable, must be something else... If you're looking to save a couple of bucks, TeraFlex redesigned their HD ball joints. I'm putting them on my Jeep to try them out. If I go thru them quickly (with my 37's) I'll go Dynatrac.

The wife's '18 had Teraflex on the axle we installed. I really liked them so I installed them on my '14 too. Much better than the synergy they replaced and much better than alloy USA and parts store BJs.

I'd like to try the Teraflex ones. If the shop honors the warranty, I'm not sure if they'll make me put the Alloy USA ones back in or if I can maybe pay a upcharge and put something else in.

Like as in easy to install, or because of the easy access to grease zerks, or is that preload adjustment actually more than marketing?

They all seem about the same to install, I like the way the ride/feel compared to others.

The warranty is from Alloy USA, and not the shop, true?

I would venture a guess that if honored, Alloy USA would provide the shop with replacement ball joints, and not simply cash to apply to anything.

Iím also impressed with the smoothness in the ride since I installed the new Teraflex HD balljoints. Iím not saying itís Caddy smooth now but the improvement was noticeable over jars & bumps.

Since the preload came set from the factory I havenít messed with it, but Iíll probably check it before the snow falls since one Michigan winter (road salt) tends to render any adjustable components in the steering linkage inoperable. In this case Iím guessing the thumb screws & preload tension nut would be damn hard to budge come next spring

Yeah so it looks like Alloy USA is shipping out a replacement pair so unfortunately putting in Teraflex is not an option unless I want to buy them and try to sell the replacement Alloy USA ones. Worth it?

My shop is dumbfounded, they were the ones that recommended Alloy USA as a step up from factory to begin with and they’ve never had a set go bad. They’re giving me a 50% discount on labor to install them, I thought that pretty nice of them.

I would think you're going to get about 28k out of these new ones. Sell the alloys and buy the teraflex, if your shop guy will still give you 50% off on labor its a win. Otherwise you do this over again.

And by the time you install 2 sets of alloys and then a set of TF joints you could have just done the dynatracs from the get go and not went through this....

Alright, looks like I might have to track down a good deal for Teraflex.

Anybody want a good deal on brand new Alloy ball joints?

Joe Cruz @ morris4x4.com Tell him I said to give you a good deal or I'll stop the orders.

Anything else I should be upgrading while I have the ball joints out? I want to get gussets welded in, truss and sleeves will have to wait.

Gussets are the most important and sleeves are only $75. The guy that did my gussets and ball joints didn't charge me for the sleeves to be installed.

thinking about upgrading mine when the time comes to TF. Probably a dumb question but how often do you have to grease them?

I would do rare parts ball joints. Theyre dual load sharing ball joints, so the top one shares some of the load from the bottom one.

I'm going to stick with the Alloy USA ball joints because that's what they're offering to put in for me. Next time they go bad I'm replacing them myself, most likely with Teraflex ones.

I'm getting them to weld in the gussets for me while they have them out. I'm planning to truss my axle once I have a open weekend. I'm a welder by trade so that seems like a better plan then sleeving.
