Are you sure you had a locker ??? Last I checked you couldn’t get a TruTrac for a Rubicon D44.
Lockers only come in Rubi D44 and LSD are optional in the Sport/Sahara D44.

Did you have chipped spider gears or did they just need to rebuild the clutch?

Just replaced my factory rear diff cover and fluid and found some chipped gears. Very light off road and no ice or snow in FL. I'm at 52k miles. Apparently I need to get my '14 Polar Ed. with Trac-Loc to the dealer asap. My build thread has some recent pics of my rear gears this thread seems to be discussing.

I believe he is referring to his Jeep having and LSD from the factory, not locker.

Well a cool option in a 2013 Jeep Moab edition you could get a rear selectable locker.

Sorry, as mentioned I was talking about the clutch based LSD that comes in some Jeeps from the factory, I believe that is what this thread is about. Although, as mentioned, it is confusing the way Jeep refers to their clutch based LSD's and the locker option. As I recall, Trak-Loc is the clutch based LSD and Tru-Loc is the electric locker. But I could be wrong. Either way, we had a clutch based LSD from the factory that was showing signs of being worn out (reduced effectiveness) at around 22,000 miles. But when we regeared we replaced it with a Truetrac and have had no issues since. They should come from the factory with Truetracs.

The spider gears were sheared and slivered like a Ginsu Knife commercial this last time.
The first time it was like a bomb went off in a ballbearing factory.

No worries, just clarification... some say the Backcountry has a TruLok which would mean they have a full Rubicon rear diff. I personally haven’t seen one around here with that option. However, we do have a Moab and 2 Xgames models that do have the Rubi rear diffs in them.

THEY WEAR OUT AND FAST. When the clutch pack wears out it tends to drop one or more pins into the gears.

The clutch pack on my 2014 let go at 74000 miles just 22 days before the end of my 5year/100000 mile power train warranty.

Jeep replaced the clutch pack, pinion gear, both wheel bearings and all the seals and thrust washers. Nearly everything but the main gear and the carrier housing under warranty.

I was told 50k to 75k is about the life of the Trac-Lok clutch pack if it is seriously used in 4 wheel drive in soft ground where there is a lot of wheel spinning.

Also I get about 25k on the rear brakes. I am on my third set set of pads and second pair of rotors at 74,052 miles.

So if you start hearing a noise in the rear end and you have Trac-Lok get it looked at before it drops pins. Mine forwarned me with a clunking noise about two months before it let go.

On the bright side it was warranty covered completely.

Thanks Jeep.
That's not much mileage for either but only 25,0000 for the rear brakes? What the heck?

Yes, my 18 willys has the same optional rear locker. I think it was an extra $1695.00.

You don’t have both.

Trac-Loc was standard, and the optional Tru-Loc replaced it.

Optional upgraded equipment is not “in addition to” the standard content. It replaces it.

Great information, I thought because it was listed under the "Backcountry Edition 23X $ 4,700" portion of the window sticker it was there as well. I thought by default it would be on and then if I pressed the Tru-Lok switch it would take over.

Thanks guys for setting me straight.

Yes I get that. I just mis- stated it. Thanks for the clarification. Never heard any mention of it but does the factory locker ever fail the way the LSD does? Thinking down the road of maybe adding an Eaton LSD to the front.

Yes & no. The LSD fails because it's clutch-based and clutches wear out over time from use.

Lockers can fail too but not in the same manner. The most common issue with the stock lockers seems to be failing to unlock.

I'd definitely rather have an Eaton LSD upfront than another locker.

My 2016 Backcountry Sahara states on the window sticker a 24X Backcountry Edition package which includes the Dana 44 Heavy Duty rear axle and a Trac-Lok Rear Differential. It came from the factory with 3:21 front and rear axle ratios that I changed to 4:11.
It did not come with electronic locking options. Just posting the way my Backcountry was built, not suggesting anyone's information stated here was incorrect.

Our Back Country was delivered the same way. It had the Trac-Lok rear axle (which is a clutch based LSD). That was standard with the Back Country package. But some people added the Tru-Lok rear axle, which is a locking rear axle like on the Rubicon. It costs something like $1600 additional and you also gave up the Trac-Lok rear LSD that was part of the Back Country package.
We replaced our clutch based Trac-Loc with a Truetrac in the rear. I wish it came with the Truetrac from the factory.
