New Harbor Freight winch coming soon?

Saw this on Reddit today - couldn't find any more details on specs, pricing, etc. but looks like it should be in stores soon. Finally has synthetic line!

Depending on final pricing and a 20% off coupon, this may be a nice pickup.

I know HF doesn't always have the best rep, but usually their bag for the buck is great.

Can't wait to see some reviews / comparisons.

Whoa nelly! I'd love me a Zeon or other high dollar winch but I don't do a lot of winching. This could fit the bill more than nicely for someone who doesn't expect to be climbing the Rubicon trail tomorrow...

My 3 year old 9K Badlands winch doesn't owe me anything. I would be interested in seeing what the line speed of that new HF winch is. Mine is slower than frozen molasses.

Harbor Freight has been stepping up their game lately. I have several of the new brands and they are actually quality stuff. The Vulcan welder is right there with a Hobart or Esab, The Earthquake impact gun is better than my buddy's Snap On for torque, The Quinn 1/2" metric sockets are really nice and have better tolerances than the Pittsburgh stuff. The US General tool box combinations are really nice too.

Someone who apparently works at HF shared some info on the suspected pricing...

$699

I think it'll be a hard sell at that price, considering you can get Quadratec, Warn VR, Smittybilt, etc. for similar price if not cheaper. Still looks nice though lol

Thats still only going to bring it down to 560 plus tax. There are a lot of hard working, proven winches at or under that price point that I'd consider before this guy.

Quadratec's 12K synthetic rope winch runs $699.99

https://www.quadratec.com/p/quadrate...synthetic-rope

The Warn version is $849.99

https://www.quadratec.com/p/warn/vr-...synthetic-rope

The Smittybilt 10K version is $652.99

https://www.quadratec.com/p/smittybi...ynthetic-98510

I'd agree - HF will have to beat those prices considerably if they want me to take their winch seriously. And then I want to put a coupon on it and get another 20% off!

They'll likely exlcuude this from the 20% off. I wouldn't count on it.

But, I guess we'll see.

Same price as the new XCR 12k Gen3. However, Smittybilt does have a better warranty.

IDK, if HF wants to start playing in the higher priced range a 90 day warranty is not going to cut it. I'm not a big fan of Smittybuilt, but a 5 year electrical and lifetime mechanical is a heck of lot better than 90 days.

Alot of HF items are chinese patent knock-offs or such. I'd be surprised if the internals were not similar or better than the original.... That's alot of money for a 90 day warranty... doesn't even make it a season nevermind a winter

You really need to compare the total price vs warranty as well as add in convenience factors if you have to use that warranty. Things that typically come with a longer warranty typically have a higher price. Thus, you're paying for that extended warranty, its built into the price. Every electrical item at HF you are given a choice of purchasing an extended warranty. Typically, you can purchase a 1 year or 2 year extended replacement plan. You get the 90 day for free. For the 2 year on a winch it was $40 when I originally purchased my Badlands winch.

Now to the convenience part. When/if the Smittybuilt fails what do you have to do to use that warranty? Do you have a local store you can bring it to? Or are you contacting someone from Smittybuilt online, going through 20 questions, and waiting for them to make a decision, and then shipping that heavy winch back to them and playing the wait game? Then are they repairing or replacing it? I often find that entire process becomes a headache I rather not deal with. With the HF extended replacement plans, you bring the winch into the local store, walk out with a new winch, no questions asked. I rather have that choice of deciding if I want the extended warranty or not, and that type of convenience that comes with it if I have to use that warranty. 5 years vs 2 year duration differences becomes irrelevant at that point to me.

If someone has actually used their 5 year warranty on a Smittybuilt winch and could share their full experience of how that entire process went, I would be interested in hearing that type of feedback.

Yep, let's do an apples to apples break down comparison on price and warranty.

$699 for the Smittybilt comparible 12K winch with synth line and a 5 year warranty.

$599 with the coupon which is typically always available for a comparable 12K HF Badlands winch with synth line. Add in the $40 of the 2 year HF replacement plant. The 2 year warranty does not kick in until after the initial 90 day warranty expires. That puts you at $640 with a 2 year and 3 month replacement plan warranty.

So the HF comes in at $60 less with a 2.25 year no questions asked replacement plan vs. the 5 year warranty of the Smittybilt.

Anyone with any kind of math skills can see you're paying $100 more for their 5 year warranty on the Smittybilt.

Oh and by the way, if you use your HF replacement plan, when you receive the "new" replacement, you are given the opportunity to purchase another $40 2 year replacement plan on that "new" replacement and it's also pro-rated so if you used it in 1 year instead of 2 years, you pay the $40 minus the difference of what is left of your original replacement plan. So let's do that math...the HF winch is now $680 with a 4.25 year replacement plan warranty. Still less than the total cost of the Smittybilt at $699.

Now start asking the question which Warranty is easier to use if you actually have to use it and which do you feel comfortable with that you won't be denied with any fine print details or hassles? Which one provides you a "new" replacement winch?

Everyone can make their own decisions but my preference definitely leans towards the Badlands winch over the Smittybilt. You actually get a better and more convenient warranty with the Badlands winch IF you decide to pay for it. The $100 warranty built into the price of the Smittybilt is for individuals with bad math skills who are too lazy to do this type of break down comparison. They seem unable to do apples to apples comparisons, and just look at the surface that the Badlands has a 90 day warranty and the Smittybilt has a 5 year warranty.

Do the math as I just explained and it makes much more sense. You are given the choice to purchase a replacement plan warranty with the HF winch and its actually a better and more convenient warranty to use.

Not really and apples to apples comparison if you're comparing a deep discount to manufacturers listed price.

Show me the deep discount of the Smittybilt winch and I'll compare that to the HF winch price. You obviously don't shop at HF very often because if you did, you would realize they have coupons repeatedly going out every week on the same items and anyone shopping at HF without their coupons is a fool. Every holiday they post their 25% off coupon and you can purchase it at $599 with that as well. Show me the deep discount of the Smittybilt winch.

This coupon was already posted earlier. I guarantee you, that there will be multiple coupons following the october 27 expiration date of this coupon at that same "deep discount" price and likely some with an even lower price.
