New Jeep Wrangler owner & questions

Hello! This is my first post and I just purchased a 2015 JKU Sahara with the Altitude package.

Happy to be here and to learn.

I read on several posts that you should remove the stock rails before going off-road. The rails on mine look different than the ones I normally see. Can you tell if they are aftermarket or if these are solid enough to leave on?

Also about two weeks after I bought the Jeep, I noticed the engine fan was super loud. Sounds like a jet. When I turn off the car it takes a couple seconds for the fan to go off. When I start up the vehicle it sounds normal and the loud fan doesn’t start until a few minutes into the drive. I then also noticed that the engine temp gauge was going past the 3/4 mark towards hot while driving normal, non-highway speeds. The AC and heater work fine. Luckily I bought this Jeep from a good, but non-Jeep dealership, so they are happy to fix the issue even though I’m out of warranty since I’ve only had the Jeep 2.5 weeks. Any thoughts on this?

The brake pedal started squeaking too so I told them to please add white lithium grease to it.

Other than that, I freaking love this vehicle. Looking forward to some good times with it.

Thanks

Those look like the 4 door version of what came with my 2 door. So, they are stock rock rails.

I agree. They look like the factory rock rails from a Hard Rock (or 10A or Rubi X).

Itís the stock side steps you should take off before off-roading those are rock rails so you can leave them on.

Right.
The Sahara comes stock with a plastic step that can get mutilated offroad. Those rails are fine unless you're going hardcore.

The fan and cooling system though --- that ain't right. We can't armchair diagnose that. Read up on CHOAT/OAT coolant and other radiator problems that are common and get to the dealer.

Thanks for answering the question about the rails.

For the cooling system issue, I’m hoping the dealership I bought it from can take care of it.

Can you buy extended warranty for pre-owned Jeeps through FCA or are there any recommended warranties for pre-owned Jeeps?

Those look to be OEM "enhanced Rubicon rails." Worthy of leaving on, unless you plan on some hardcore rock crawling.

As for the overheating, not normal when you are running the factory grille and haven't got it obstructed by aftermarket accessories. Ask the dealership if they topped off the radiator or expansion tank with some generic coolant- if they did, it can react with what is already in there (FCA's HOAT or OAT, depending on model year and build date). First step should be an inspection of the cooling system, followed by a complete flush and refill with the appropriate coolant if everything looks to be OK.

Most third party extended warranties are expensive with high deductibles. I would be very careful if you go that route. The FCA extended warranties would be available on certified pre-owned vehicles purchased from a Jeep dealer.

Get in touch with Jeep cares and ask them when your Jeep ( vin number ) first went in service. You may have some warranty left. And as Basicxj said get the coolant and cooling system checked.

Hello Silvercord,

Welcome to the Jeep family.. Yes MVP (Mopar Vehicle Protection) does offer service contacts on pre owned vehicles.. The link below will give you alittle more insight on what the plans offer..

Wildtoad is correct if you would like us to see if there any remaining warranty left on your vehicle please just send us a private message with your Vin and a request for warranty info.

I typo'd CHOAT instead of HOAT.

Look into that fast. If you mix non-compatible coolants they turn into Jello.
My nearest dealership gave me the wrong stuff a while back --- Mother Jeep was nice enough to pay a smarter dealer to remediate the mess.

I think forum regulars knew exactly what you were referring to.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but FCA seems to use these coolants to extend service interval for the cooling system, rather than using them because they are the best tool for the job.

Non-Jeep service centers see no harm in topping up coolant on one of these vehicles with generic stuff, and unfortunately even Jeep dealers don't understand across the board what exact coolant type should be added.

Temp past 3/4 in normal driving is not.. normal.

You should get it checked; but if I were you I'd get the coolant flushed and replaced since you don't know what the previous owner did.

The overheating issue may also be caused by a bad thermostat, the good news is that's a cheap part and easy repair on the JK.

It has a lot to do with all of the materials used in the cooling system as well. Different plastics, elastomers, metals, etc. Compatibility with the coolant and the materials in the cooling system = longer life for the cooling system. This is the main difference between HOAT and OAT. The MOC's have changed in recent years, which is why the type of coolant changed also. While the change may have been based on solid engineering and materials science, what comes into play in the real world I like to call The Law of Unintended Consequences. When people don't understand or don't follow directions, the two types of coolant get mixed together and there are unintended consequences.

Thanks for all the replies! You all have been great. I purchased this Jeep from a Park Place dealership “as is”. They have been nothing short of amazing taking care of me. They said they wouldn’t leave me hanging high and dry.

Since they don’t specialize in Jeeps, they took it over to a Jeep dealer and they found out it was a bad thermostat. They replaced it and I should be picking it back up tomorrow!

I should add they flushed everything too and checked the water pump for leaks. Water pump was good.

Lamar,

I didn’t purchase this from a Jeep dealer but I did from a very reputable luxury dealership in the DFW area: Park Place.

Would I still be eligible for extended warranty? Pretty sure all I have left is the Powertrain warranty.

Since the Altitude is based on the Sahara, you should have the fully funcitional EVIC (Electronic Vehicle Information Center) that displays in the lower part of the left dial. It is accessed by the Menu button on the left side of the steering wheel. The first position is the Compass and Outside air Temp, then Digital Speedometer, then Average Fuel Economy (since the last reset), then I believe is distance to empty (DTE) on the fuel, then tire pressure on the four tires on the ground then the vehicle information. These are accessed by the down button again on the left side of the steering wheel. One of these is the engine temperature. You will find the average temp in normal conditions is about 208 deg. F.
