Arrow New Owner Newbie Questions

Hi All-
I just posted in the New Member Check In (please check that out) so will get to the point here. First time jeep owner as of last week looking for some tips, hints, how to's etc. for learning the ropes in doing some upgrades on the '14 Sahara base model. The following are things I need to address first before being pulled into more off road issues, so anything you could suggest on any item appreciated & TIA!

1) Where can I find the build sheet on this vehicle or where can I purchase it?

2) How do I read the info contained in the VIN, a link to this?

3) With previous sport car forums I was a member of in the past, it was common place to find someone with CarFax access who could run your VIN, wondering if that is still possible and if anyone here can do that?

4) Recommended seat covers for front seats?

5) Recommended spare tire cover?

6) I want to add a trailer hitch, need to know Axle ratio. Best to buy through Dealership, online, specialty shop or local hitch shop? If a bolt-on with no welding I will & prefer to do myself-

7) I want to add a strong/solid roof rack for a Mad River canoe and Thule ski box (no intention to have both on same time). Same questions as with Trailer hitch-

8) Any links to highly used/recommended/fair priced aftermarkets? Specific items that are best bought through Dealership?

Thanks for any advise or info on any of the above questions, it will be a big help in getting me started. Thanks everyone

You didn't run a CarFax before buying it??

Use this link to view your window sticker which will show axle ratio, just replace the VIN with yours.

https://www.chrysler.com/hostd/windo...RDJEG3KC633763

I went with the quadratec hitch package. It has the Hitch with plug & play 4-flat wiring. For $75, very easy install.

Most of the vendors supporting this forum have great selection and fair prices.

Quadratec, Northridge 4x4, Extreme Terrain, Steer Smarts, Discount Tire, stand out for their customer service too.

  4. Recommended seat covers for front seats? Bartact. /discussion LINK
  5. Recommended spare tire cover? None
  6. I want to add a trailer hitch, need to know Axle ratio. Best to buy through Dealership, online, specialty shop or local hitch shop? If a bolt-on with no welding I will & prefer to do myself- Easy, 4 bolts. LINK

  8. Any links to highly used/recommended/fair priced aftermarkets? Specific items that are best bought through Dealership? Depends on what you're doing with your Jeep. A desert runner is different than a rock crawler which is different than a mall crawler.

Good luck! Glad to have you here

Hi everyone & thanks for all the replies- keeping me busy now!

In reply to why I didn’t run a Carfax, I had a 2006 Forester that I hit an Elk with on Snoqualmie Pass, it wasn’t totaled but later found out with the extent of damage I could have forced the ins to total it. About 1 year after the 3 month reconstruction of it I jumped out of it at a red stop light downtown Missoula, MT and watched it burn completely. Up to the point it burned, CarFax never showed it was nearly totaled, nor in any accidents. So, I’m not a buyer into CarFax.

Thanks to all for the recommended “Quadratec” hitch, looks good-
I’ll be doing homework on the roof rack but at least have allot of options/links/brands to explore now-

I have set-up the Mopar.com owner page but it tells me if it was recently bought I will have to wait a period of time for info to be posted. It makes me wonder if that page will allow me to proceed since I’m the second owner not the original buyer?

Things have become very confusing since using the variety of different links to Build sheets and window stickers. None of them match, certainly on many items but not all, and large differences in the number of items listed.

The sites listed here and others I’ve now found for reading the VIN are WAY off. All say it’s not a Jeep but not defined, for example my VIN make is “C” not J. Says I have MPV(no side bags) while build sheets/window stickers will say it does or no mention.Vehicle WT is “B” which is not defined. In VIN decoder above my Series/Transmission is “W” which is undefined.

Using Blue Baby Sounds VIN link I get the most info, 6 pages of items, and most notable- mentions to “Canada”. For example: Build To Canada Mkt. Specifications, Canada Dealer Retail, Zone 25-Canada-Alberta, Canada Specifications Label, Alberta Province Code, Canada Country Code, Canada Region Group, NAFTA Region. I bought this 1 owner vehicle in Whitefish, MT at a USA Chevy/Jeep dealership with no mention that it came from Canada when asked. I feel I will never see the actual build sheet to know it’s history. Yet it’s like new out of the box with 17K miles. Dealer says it was a summer car, a probable vacation home in Whitefish.

pm me your vin and I will see what I can do. for info tho it probably did come from Canada as Whitefish is close and very possible that it was either bought at auction or a Canadian came down and traded it or sold it. I have had two buddies that bought rigs that came from Canada one was purchased in Oregon and the other in Idaho. Neither knew it until one had issues with his and got screwed on warranty and the other was an older one with no warranty but he ran the vin and it came from up north.

I hear ya on the CarFax. I've seen lots of repairs not reported, AutoCheck and NVIS included. But they will also tell you any title issues or Grey market.

The link I provided in post #2 is accurate. If it's a Canadian vehicle, it will populate a Canada window sticker.

Thanks SecondTJ-
I get the same window sticker through the mopar.com, My Vehicle Dashboard when scolling down to "window sticker". The two ads on the right side of the sticker are the same but worded & arranged a little different. Between the two ads on my window sticker is printed this in BOLD: "This vehicle is manufactured to meet specific Canadian Requirements. This vehicle is not manufactured for sale or registration outside of Canada."

That worries me, The Dealer talked me into buying an extended 6 yr. warranty with it on top of it all. I'll be going back to the dealer this week for agreed fix to the radio and will bring all this up. They obviously have kept this info from me.

Well, IIRC, Canada had both 3.73 and 4.10 as optional axle ratios long after 4.10 was Rubicon only in the US.

If you've got either of these, she's a keeper.

You definitely purchased a grey market vehicle. Resale value on them is terrible, so you save a lot of money upfront, but will get hurt when you go to sell it. They talked you into purchasing an extended warranty because any balance of the Canadian factory warranty is not valid in the USA.

I would look into your state's disclosure laws.

You can also verify by looking at your driver side door jam manufacture sticker will have a maple leaf on it. Also, under hood engine emissions sticker will say which country standards it conforms to.

This chart doesn't work for mine at all. Some of the codes in my VIN are not even in the chart above... had me worried there for a second. On Jeep.com I can login and see everything, and it's all correct there.

Just checked mine and it doesn't work for me either, I should have checked it before posting. Sorry guys.
I'm going to delete the source pic so I don't spread bad info.

I think it's a good chart, just not for everyone. And there is a reroute link in the brown box at the bottom if your VIN does not work with the chart.

I looked at it and ones from Extreme Terrain and Morris 4X4 and they all said about the same thing, weird. I checked my '14 VIN against it and it was completely wrong LOL

I also requested a build sheet from this: https://www.jeep.com/webselfservice/jeep/EmailPage.html Hope this gives me a copy of the original build sheet so I know what it actually has, not just all the possibilities & options on a stock Sahara USA model, as that is all I seem to find-

This pulls up a Dodge Durango sticker for me?

I would think you would have to sign something acknowledging the fact you're buying a Canadian model?

The factory basic warranty is expired but it would've nice to have the 5 year/100k powertrain warranty if you bought a 2014 model. But that would be over soon anyway. I'm wondering if you can even use the extended warranty on a Canadian model? Is it only valid at the dealership you bought it from?

Yep, that's it. You 100% have a Canadian market Jeep.

There should also be a sticker somewhere declaring who converted the odometer from km to mi. That'd be my next worry, is if it reflects the correct mileage.

I'd definitely spend the money and purchase a CarFax or AutoCheck to track its usage, as that is very shady on the dealer's part for not disclosing that's it's a grey market car.

Yes, you can change it to any FCA vehicle VIN # and it will pull up the window sticker.

I've seen a lot of grey market Durango's lately, so I posted its Canadian sticker for reference.

The link to the VIN decoder now that Blue Baby Sound has edited his post (post #5) worked for me. Perhaps it only works on US built vehicles, but it was 100% accurate based on my VIN.

Weird, it wasn't even close for my '14 (US build)

Very new to the forum.... i am hoping someone has an answer for my issue. My heater control will only blow Very HOT Temperature or if you move it just one notch it blows cold like air. There is NO regulated - You have to always reaching down and turning the fan off and on. There is no noise I hear everyone talking about when the blend door goes out. I REALLY COULD USE SOME HELP!
