Hey Bill, I have contacted BRP and have asked them to correct that information. Spyder Auto does claim to be DOT approved and they should have never made that statement on the video that was posted.

The lights are DOT/SAE compliant

I would also like to say that the smoked versions of any lights are for off road and show purpose only. They are not intended for on road use.

The reflective material in lights isn't chrome, btw. It's vaporized aluminum and much more reflective than chrome.

The dude in the video also said something that always bothers me. He said "DOT approved". The DOT doesn't have approval power.
Spyder certifies the lights as compliant with FMVSS-108 and that means they're compliant with anything the DOT cares about.
The back-up lights are pretty bright and I have a question mark over my head as to whether they're actually compliant... ...but that's one of those areas that doesn't bother me too much (I say with some degree of embarrassment). I've been wanting more than 400 or 500 candela back there for years.

Cool. Words matter.
Still wish the smoked version wasn't even available though. Reminds me of a young custom motorcycle dude I met a long time ago in Daytona. I helped him wheel his show bike onto a spot on the boardwalk and noticed that it had no functioning brakes, just chromed rotors and calipers (sans pistons). I asked him how he stopped and he said, "oh, you don't ride this bike; you look at it..."

I just feel that safety equipment should always work. Because there will always be somebody that thinks it's okay to use the show version on the street and will inevitably end up in a Darwin thread.

That's the problem with Asian market items, isn't it? No exclusivity in branding.
I'd stick with the vendor/brander that gives you the best customer service.

I was hoping the new 2018 JL would have LED tail lights that would fit the 2017's, but looks like that didn't happen. From what I have seen and read on this forum, most after market head lights and tail lights are junk, or just don't hold up as they should.

Fixed it. The higher end lights are fine in my experience. Time will tell where these lights fall. But if the OP ends up endorsing them, they will be a solid product. Heís anal retentive enough that I donít have any doubts in a lighting product he likes.

I'm still running a set of prototype JWS 8700-J headlights; not a flicker or hint of failure.

The original Trucklite Phase 7 prototypes that we installed in Chris' JK failed after less than a year. I never measured as much light output from another set of TL Phase 7s, btw.

Going the distance is 90% of why I want LED in the first place.

$230 vs. $500, the $500 better have fantastic customer service.

The $230 is claimed to be a sale price. Don't know if that is true, but I got my order in, just in case this vendor jumps the price up to $500 too.

The vendor said in a recent video the price will remain at $230 throughout
2018.

I'm sure you could use a piece of sandpaper and remove the shine....

I thought he said sale to end of year, as in 2017. I was thinking some fine steel wool to dull the gloss also.

He's probably a one man band so it might take a few more days. No word on my order either. I see you ordered red. I was going to order red but there are no videos so I couldn't compare. I like the light output color with clear so I didn't want to take a chance of not liking the red. There probably is very little difference between them though other than the color of the plastic.

Post a few pics when you get yours, or better yet a video.

Received my white set today. They installed in minutes and work fine. I did add extra zip ties to help hold the thin wires used to wire them so the factory harness wouldn't pull directly on the plugs or connections on the spyder unit. There are some small holes on the spyder housings that small zip ties fit right thru. Cosmetically they look good. The only thing I would change is the red side LED just sits in a square hole. I think it would have a much more finished look if they had put a clear plug or plastic window over the hole. I do agree it would fit the looks of a jeep better molded in a a rough matte black. Brightness is good but does not seem to be blinding like some you see on the tuner cars. Now we will see how they hold up.
