Question Overhead CB radio mount - 2016 JKUR

For the next phase of my build i need to layer in comms, which I overlooked previously.

After doing a bunch of research, i see that the Cobra 29 LX gets pretty much universal good reviews and two features which are a must for me (NOAA and installed SWR meter). As such, pretty much locked in on that unit (open to suggestions if there is another unit that folks like that is "better" than this one.

What i need now is an overhead mounting system that is weatherproof, can be locked up, and won't cause the unit to overheat. I see that Tuffy makes an offering, but many seem to dislike it, which surprised me.

So what is everyone using for this? I see a ton of guys in the Wayalife youtube series that most seem to have this type of setup (+ HAM which i'll get to later) but can't seem to find what they are using.

So use case - since i know someone will ask:

-Primarily for trail usage, but will also be used for the road when caravaning, road trips, etc.
-Needs to be rattle free and solid
-Needs to be fairly weatherproof, heavier emphasis on dust / dog hair vs. water
-Needs to be ventilated so the unit doesn't overheat
-Needs to be a commercially sold unit, not making my own
-Needs to have a well defined and proven wiring system

Think that is enough to get people started??

TIA
D

I'm interested also. I bought a Galaxy for my 2012 sport and temporarily mounted it to the dash. Way too big, not happy at all. Since I'm planning on a 2016 Rubicon, I'd like an overhead mount.

I bought the console mount from Quadratec for a Galazy radio. It wasn't perfect but it seemed like the best solution. The overhead would interfere with the rear view mirror for me.

adding one more requirement, looks likely i will end up with an overhead SPOD setup as well, so i believe that is going to make this even more compicated

Thumbs up

Sent a note to both SPOD and Tuffy to see if anyone has a solution for this yet. Was surprised to get a call back from SPOD today (on a Sunday). She said she wasn't aware of a mass produced offering yet, but suggested that i could use their CAD file to have one custom made. She was going to check with some other folks tomorrow and let me know if there is anything else.

Will let you all know what Tuffy says when i get a response from them.

Yeah I've got a Cobra 75 WX ST which made it easy to install inside the back of my center console

I have a metal cnc'd overhead molle rack that I got off fleabay from user alanjk47. Works very well, holding my cobra 29 and the head unit of a yeasu radio above that. Its not weather proof, if the tops are off and it rains they will be soaked. I dig the unit. I dont have dangling cords smackin me in the face and I can see the displays fine. Plus, theres room for other things molle related, I had a holster towards the back with a pistol in it while camping/wheeling and can see fine out the rear view.

Drilling is involved and if you are the type to drop your windshield this wont work for you. Also, if you do the 'spin the rear view mirror upside down' trick, you'll have to spin it back to see out of it. I have easy access to the freedom top hold downs without any issue.
