pernounce willys

My dad swears Willys jeep is pernounced "Willis" and I keep telling him it's "Willies". I can't tell if he's messing with me or not.

He's the reason I thought chocolate milk came from brown cows until I was a teen so you can see why I'm skeptical.

any thoughts?

The Jeep itself is Willis. The company is pronounced Willys.

You can confirm this by calling Willys company in Ohio and asking. We had this same dispute in the Club Willys forum.

^ I'm not so sure that's right either. This discussion has been around awhile too.

This article also has some info near the bottom - though it far from answers this question - Willys Story

Here are some sound bites, it opens a .wav file when you click them. Basically all are saying Willis, but the question then becomes, are they referring to the brand or the model. These were very early clips when Willys-Overland was a brand, not just a model of Jeep.
Willys Sound Bytes

I also have is a newspaper article from Toledo with some Jeep explanations - J.N. Willys pronounced his name `Willis,' local Jeep historian says - Toledo Blade

I had this youtube link saved from before, and at 4:45 they begin the discussion of the new Jeep from Willys-Overland. They pronounce the company name at Willis. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bf6qnM2pXY

About 10 minutes into this promotional video from the early 50s, the people are pronouncing the man Willis and the vehicle Willees.

I though the "y" had a "i" sound, not an "e" sound, because it had that consonant ("s") at the end, and it was not plural.

Pronounce it with an "e" sound, and people will giggle at you (ie, "Hay, what to see my willy?"). Kind of like telling people you just got a new wench.

I've heard for a while that it's properly pronounced "Will-is" but I may be too old to change.

I have pronounced it "Will-eze" for years, as did my Father as well as my Grandfather.

Change is hard and not really sure if its worth it (sorry pronunciation purists)

It's "Willies"

Credentials: lived on the street one next to Willys avenue that connects to the old Jeep plant for 15 years of my life.

Yeah I've seen all this too. Someone in one of the threads made a good point and had something to back it up where over time the name kinda just changed. Everyone started referring to the Willys model as Willees and no longer Willis. I just think it's the old school way of saying it.

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter. Even Jeep pronounces it Willees. So who knows.

I'm sure all of us are right in some way?...

Haha I agree with this. Sorry didn't see your post before I posted. Time and evolution change a lot of things...

I love that video clip because it really shows what an old commercial promotion was in the 40's. I also like how they say the tv has been perfected at 2:10.

I think time has changed it a lot, but as long as we all know what we are talking about, then I'm fine with either pronunciation.

This clip is from 1968. It shows how much fun the Rubicon Trail used to be with just a stock Jeep - and a lot of friends. Not Willy's related per se, but fun to see all the older Jeeps in their natural habitat.

Just took my kids sledding on willies park. Just off of willies pkwy. Never heard it pronounced Willis until I joined the forum. It may have been pronounced Willis in the 50's but it has evolved. Everyone around here that I know of pronounces it willies, the owner of the willys overland name now pronounces it willies. And I can't believe I got dragged into this again. Lol. Besides I don't know about you but it's more fun to get it all polished up. Get naked and drive around showing everyone my willies. Nobody wants to see a Willis.

That's kind of like the people who live in the Madrid NY calling it Mad-rid, not Ma-drid.

You're probably right. When I get mine I think I'll remove the "Willys" hood decal and get one made up that says "Bantam"....that'll be different. ?

Then people will ask why you named your jeep after a rooster!
